Wednesdays should be noisy. It’s a new rule. To help us stick to it, check out Fatality and turn their video up nice and loud while you read…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We’re all from Essex, UK but our drummer Jordan was born and lived in New Zealand for the beginning of his life.
How did you meet?
So myself (Josh) and Gareth had been in a band together for years before Fatality started. When that band broke up we started this project with ex drummer Chris. He knew our bassist Matt from a long time ago through work so that’s how we got him involved. Then we recruited our current drummer Jordan through auditions in late 2019.
How long have you been playing as a band?
Fatality have been around since summer of 2016 but we’ve only had our most recent lineup (after Jordan joined) since November 2019. However Josh and Gareth have been playing alongside each other in other projects for 10 years now.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
Haha! We don’t get sick of being asked that at all *cough cough*. We’re all really big video game fans. When we first started the band we didn’t have a name and we were all playing Mortal Kombat. When one of us won a fight the words “FATALITY” came up on the screen and Josh said ‘That would be a good name for a band’ and it just stuck.
What are your influences?
Pretty much all of our life events or the way we feel regarding certain subjects. We obviously draw inspiration from loads of different bands and artists that we look up to including the likes of Slipknot, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, Machinehead etc but our main inspiration would just be the fact that we all really enjoy doing it. Writing music cohesively with your best friends is the best inspiration for what we do!
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
I’d say our energy makes us unique. When we play live we move, jump, headbang and shout until we drop and we’d like to think that this energy comes across in our music as well. We’re always trying to push our own boundaries of how energetic and enjoyable we can be.
Our music? I’d describe us as a mix between nu-metal, heavy metal, hip hop and anything else we decide to throw into our music at the time. With high energy and a big sound!
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
We don’t have a set theme to all our lyrics apart from the fact that we draw influence from things that directly affect us. This could be an emotional state, life events or things that are happening in the world. It will always be something that evokes an emotional response in us as we feel that this comes across in our music the most. If we don’t believe what we’re singing then how can we expect the audiences to connect.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
We’ve played more shows than we can list that’s for sure! Our shows are high energy, non-stop movement and a lot of crowd interaction. We love to just blow all our beans and get the audience involved as much as possible so we can all enjoy the show together.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Haha this is a question that’s come up a few times and I never get tired of telling it at the expense of Gareth’s dignity! For one gig Gareth (guitarist) decided to wear some old cargo shorts. He was getting into a power stance when his shorts decided to completely give up and tear from top to bottom, exposing his ‘little Gareth’ to everyone in the front row. I’m surprised we didn’t get arrested for indecent exposure after the show as I’m 99% sure everybody saw it! This is the reason Gareth never wears old, cheap shorts on stage now.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Matt and Gareth both play Ibanez guitars, Jordan plays a Pearl Export and I use Shure microphones usually. We do tend to experiment with different equipment but that’s what we’re using right now.
What are your plans for the next 12 months?
Well since we can’t play any live shows at the moment we’re currently just concentrating on working on and recording new music. We have our previous single “Juggernaut” as well as a music video available to stream right now. We have a brand new single “The Lesson” just out on October 5th and we also have loads more new tracks coming out in the following months.
You can get all this stuff from our website and make sure to follow us on our socials for all the updates on what we’re up to.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
We would love to support someone like Papa Roach, Slipknot, Linkin Park etc. I don’t think we need to discuss why apart from the fact they’re the main reason why we do this.
As far as an opener goes in regards to local bands we’ve worked with there’s loads of really good bands in Essex. If I were to name some I would be running the risk of missing some names out so I apologise in advance for that. The ones we’ve worked with recently would be bands like Unit 33, Walk In Coma, Bearfist, FyreSky, Beneath The Embers, Spidervayne, Gallow Wood, Mr Happy Chainsaw, Counties. There’s so many more amazing bands in the local scene that I could name but there just isn’t enough space on a page but they all deserve a chance to make it big as they’re all such amazing bands!
