Band of the Day: The Way of Purity

Ah, Sunday evening. Time to chill out, relax and bend your mind to some new music…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We cannot say where we are from. We can only say where the singers are from. Saitam is from Finland and Lost My Faith from Italy.

How did you meet?

We met because we are all animal rights activists so our paths converge towards the way of purity. The way of purity is a group of vegans that met during animal rights activities. Some of us, being musicians, have joined the project through the music world (we knew and liked each other) but the main rule to be part of TWOP is that you have to be extreme/hard line vegan.

Everything started in 2010, when Bity and I decided to use music to spread our message widely. With localized action, we can only reach a few people every time we make an effort. With music we can reach a lot of people through songs, interviews, tours, etc. Our message is the main thing, therefore, every new listener is a success for us, as we don’t give a shit about fame, money or ego. And this is why we cover our face and hide our names. Just because we don’t want our ego to become bigger than our message. Our message is about nature, animals and the perfection of their creation.

If you like what we do, consider joining us on Patreon for as little as £1 per month!

How long have you been playing as a band?

We don’t call ourselves a “band”, we are more an animal liberation front cell that spreads the message about animal rights through music. We have been working on this project since 2010.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The Way Of Purity is a path. It’s a path that you choose to follow when you respect your body and other sentient living beings. When you decide to keep your body pure like a temple and not nasty as a mass grave for rotting animal parts and bodies then you simply follow the way of purity. It’s about respect for life, nature, animals and ourselves.

What are your influences?

I guess that our main influences are the Wave/Rock bands from the past and present: Sonic Youth, Christian Death, Interpol, The Cure, Joy Division, Sisters Of Mercy and the hardcore bands, like Neurosis, Converge, Integrity, Morning Again that we listen to. We also listen to some black metal bands like Marduk or Immortal, plus a lot of Ambient/Dub/Downtempo stuff. The combination of these genres is our music.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I think the combination of very different influences, that apparently cannot stick together, makes our sound unique.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yes. The earth is a circle, the sun is a circle, time is a circle, the day is a cycle, the seasons change in a cyclical manner, nature works with cycles, animals live in cycles as well following the change of the seasons, migrating, breeding. Humans are the only species in nature that are running in a straight line and not operating in cycles (or circles).

This straight line is terrifying because it doesn’t have a beginning and doesn’t end anywhere. This straight line reveals to us that we don’t know where we have come from and that we don’t know where we are going to. Obviously, this is all due to the fact that humans are designed to hurdle headlong towards self destruction. When all humans are gone, the animals (which are designed to stay) and the planet will finally live in harmony again and everything will be beautiful just as it was before humans appeared.

Animals know where they come from, the circle is certainty, ’cause they belong to the earth, to the seasons, to time. They know the truth and they have this authentic truth in their beautiful souls . If they  disappear from the planet, the planet will die. This is one of the main differences between humans and animals: they are necessary for mother nature (therefore they belong to nature which in our religion is God) and humans are detrimental to nature.

Animals work with nature to keep the cycles moving, whereas humans destroy nature just like a virus! Animals follow their instinct, therefore they are pure. Humans only follow their own mere, small, pathetic self-interests and do not belong to nature, humans are not necessary on this planet so they have to go as soon as possible. Animals are needed, they must stay, and be left alone in peace.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

The dark shows that we play come from the use of drugs and probably the deep depression that is omnipresent in every human but we have the guts, and the courage to explore, and somehow appreciate these. Not everybody in TWOP uses drugs but for sure, the ones who write the music do. Our music is a rollercoaster of soft/ambient patterns and epic/apocalyptic explosions. That’s how we live. Sometime we swim in the hot bath of depression and fall asleep in there but when the moment to be strong again arrives we are ready to deliver the most powerful strength you can imagine.

That’s our music, that’s how we are. A fucking rollercoaster of depression and strength. Most humans are destroyed by drugs or obsessed by strength – black or white. Well, grey exists too and you can manage to experience both things. We played so may shows. We toured 3 months with Negura Bunget, the we toured with Belphegor and Gorgoroth, Cattle Decapitation, Decrepit Birth and many others. Plus we played many festivals. The last 5 years we haven’t played live though. Hopefully we will be able to play live again soon.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I guess that I have destroyed my hands punching a microphone. Blood went all over my stage mates. Sometimes I cry on stage then I scream like in pain.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I am a Warwick endorser so I only play Warwick basses.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We released our new single “Rootrot” early in September. That’s what we are working on at the moment.

Don’t fancy Patreon? Buy us a one-off beverage!

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

We will keep promoting the album with interviews and radio airplay and we will start writing the new album. Got a lot of new ideas already!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I would love to open for Comeback Kid and have As I Lay Dying opening for us. They would prepare the crowd quite well.
