Band of the Day: Mother’s Cake

Coming to you from Austria today, we’ve got Mother’s Cake taking on our infamous Band of the Day questions!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Initially we were all based in Innsbruck. Nowadays, we’re a bit more spread all over Austria.

How did you meet?

During a party at someone’s art studio somewhere in Innsbruck’s more shady, industrial corner. Fun times!

How long have you been playing as a band?

Since 2008. Geez, we are one of those rare breed 2-digit bands.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

From another episode of three drunk guys in a rehearsal room having genius world-changing ideas.

What are your influences?

In the early days we inhaled all kinds of prog and psych-rock bands. We dug deep into early 70s rock and funk and got some wisdom from German Krautrock bands. These days it’s much more a case of letting anything surrounding us inspire us to write music.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

It is always a very honest representation of us, our mood and an urge to express and inflict energy or power onto the crowd.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Our lyrics are usually written after we have some kind of demo or idea of a song.  Those recordings sometimes have lyrical fragments that stand out and give rough ideas to what the song could be about.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

On a good day it is powerful, infectious and steaming! At least that’s what we aim for. I stopped counting. If I have to guess I’d say around 500.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I got very angry at a drum not being placed on a carpet, which made it impossible to play. The poor owner of that set standing in the audience had to watch me getting more and more brutal out of frustration with that kit. He didn’t buy the vinyl after.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I have this beautiful custom shop Lynx Drum Set build by a local. Yves swears on his Strat and Benni has kind of a variety going on with his Sandberg, Gibson and Fender Percussion Bass.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our upcoming record Cyberfunk! is out now!!

What are your plans for 2020?

Well we had many, now it looks like a lot of vacation and three singles which we have already released. There will be another video coming soon and again: our record!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We would love to open for King Gizz and would bring either Milk+, Spiral Drive or Dirty Sound Magnet if we could choose.
