Band of the Day: Chasing Apparitions

Unusually, there’s no hometown for this band. Hell, they technically don’t even have a home continent

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

The band is scattered throughout 2 continents. Justin Stubbs is from Louisiana, Jacob Ortengren is from Sweden, and I’m from Indiana.

How did you meet?

I met Jacob through social media & we discussed working together to write an EP. We met Justin through our producer Jonathan Dolese because he recommended him for the project.

How long have you been playing as a band?

This lineup has been active since 2019, but the band has been around since 2015.

Before you get sick of being asked… Where does the band name come from?

Chasing Apparitions was something I saw on Tumblr a long time ago. I can’t remember the exact post or even what the post was about, but I fell in love with that name.

What are your influences?

Chasing Apparitions is influenced musically by Born of Osiris, Fit For a King, Wage War, Northlane, Architects, etc.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

In a time period where a lot of metal bands are going softer or at least trying their best to appeal to a radio audience, Chasing Apparitions continues to bring the heavy. We’re what you wanna put on when you wanna hear some riffs.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Our newest EP, Am I Worth Saving? is about death, mortality, and struggling to cope with that when you don’t believe in an afterlife. Dying isn’t really that big when you’re religious, when you believe you’re going to go to some fancy place in the sky, but when you believe you’re nothing and nothing matters, that’s a lot to unpack.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Chasing Apparitions hasn’t played a live show since 2016 and we don’t intend on playing any live shows until we get a full line-up.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

One time in Bedford, IN we saw a guitarist and vocalist fall through the stage. At first it was scary, but once we realized it was okay, we laughed it off.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I run a very simple set up. I run an Schecter SLS Elite C7 into a G90 Wireless unit into a Kemper Profile Rack unit into a 5×12, 1×15 Omega Guitar Cab. Jacob won’t play with us live & Justin is just a vocalist, so mostly the house mic.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

Chasing Apparitions released a single on September 4th entitled “Memento Mori” with our sophomore EP, Am I Worth Saving? coming out shortly after. Then in December we plan on going back into the studio to record our 2021 EP.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

For supporting I’d love to play with Northlane and for opening I’d choose either Soulseeker or Relics. They’re both phenomenal bands in my current scene.
