Band of the Day: Pale Blue Moon

Shane Kelly not only sings with Pale Blue Moon, he answers interview questions. Are there no ends to this man’s talents?!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Ireland.

How did you meet?

We all played in different bands and knew each other quite well.

If you like what we do, consider joining us on Patreon for as little as £1 per month!

How long have you been playing as a band?

We have been playing as Pale Blue Moon for a year at this stage.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The name of the band comes from a Carl Sagan poem called “Pale Blue Dot”, but as there are several bands with that name we changed to Pale Blue Moon to avoid confusion, Plus I think it suits us better, being creatures of the night…

What are your influences?

We all have very eclectic influences, from all genres of music, which gives us a great richness in our approach to song writing and recording.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

It’s straightforward rock with an emphasis on the song writing and clarity of the vocal, well I would say that anyway, I suppose.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yes, I wrote the lyrics to the album like a book, so each song is a chapter in the book, the book being the album. The themes are mostly about overcoming adversity and achieving, self-belief and positivity, I believe there is enough negativity in the world, and I have decided to deliberately add some positivity. Believe in yourself, you can do it!

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Our shows are big. We like to put on a theatrical performance give people something to look at. At this stage we have probably played about 150 shows, but the Pandemic has slowed us down.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I crowd surfed in an inflatable boat, and the crowd carried me out of the venue. Luckily, I had a radio mic. The rest of the band got worried when they could no longer see me. But they could hear me, so all was well.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Kit: Premier

Guitars: Gibson, Fender & Takamine

Bass: Hagstrom

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

At the moment we are plugging our debut single Supernatural which entered the Irish charts at number two and we have attracted over 800k views on YouTube for the video, so we are happy with that, plus our new album The Pleasure in Finding Things Out.

Don’t fancy Patreon? Buy us a one-off beverage!

What are your plans for 2020, into 2021?

We are putting a tour together so look out for us we plan to come to you!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We would support Shane MacGowan and the Popes (which we have and yes it was wild, but great fun) we would politely ask the following to open for us, Rowdy outsider, Valentino is Dead, Night blind, Kern, The Telling, Dead label.

From previous Band of the Day Muscular Child: Dave Grohl, Mick Jagger, Prince – Who would you kiss, who would you marry and who would you kill?

I would kiss Dave Grohl, and beg him to marry me, Mick Jagger is a legend and Prince RIP – love them all. (no killing that would wreck my positive Buzz)

From another BotD, Vanity: If you could go back in time and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Don’t go to the gym and so avoid having a stroke.

And from Charly&Faust: What’s your underwear colour?

Commando – can that be a colour?… TMI?
