Band of the Day: Curses

Just in case your week isn’t noisy enough… wrap your head around this lot!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Well we all grew up around here (southern West Virginia). Davey and Shane went to school together and Brandon and Eli grew up a couple of hours north. I (Michael) spent a majority of my life about an hour south of where we all currently live. The band as a whole though is from the gorgeous state of West Virginia!

How did you meet?

We all met through our early days in our small local scene and by the time we decided to actually form Curses we were already at buds.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We got together and formed Curses in early 2014, I believe.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

No worries! It’s actually not as cool as a story as you might think! It came from a programming library that Davey used in college and it was called “PdCurses”.

What are your influences?

A short list would be Silent Planet, Barrier, Invent Animate, Loathe, Currents and various other bands of that nature.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I would say it’s the way we combine all of our influences and blend them together while throwing our personal “Curses” touch on them.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

The lyrics differ quite a bit from each song but the overall theme of the album is about loss and finding a way to grow or “bloom” through the struggles of losing someone close to you.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Our live show in the past has been pretty straightforward, but once touring is allowed (and safe) we definitely plan on rebranding our set.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Well our tour package was all gathered near our vans before the venue opened and a nice (and very generous) woman walked up and jumped right into our conversation asking if any of us had acid while flashing both private parts at us (she actually had a swastika tattoo). We told her “sorry ma’am we don’t have any” but before we could finish she said “well f*** y’all“ and wandered off into the distance to never be seen again. I hope she’s doing okay!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Shane uses a Mapex Saturn kit with A-Custom and Saluda cymbals. As far as guitars, I use a Dingwall Combustion 5-string and Davey has an Ormsby TXGTR. We both use Ernie Ball guitars as our backups as well.

What are your plans for the rest of 2020?

Well as much as I would love to say touring everywhere we possibly can, a certain pandemic prevented that, so in the meantime we’re busy working our day jobs and creating as much content to put out for everyone.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Silent Planet, Curses, Fault Lines. Silent Planet is just one of our absolute favorites and Fault Lines have been long time homies (love u bois).
