A cross country effort today as our featured act is made up of artists from two of our European neighbours…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are from France and Switzerland.
How did you meet?
We met in January 2018 thanks to the musical classifieds, we soon got into rehearsals and just hooked together well. I met Patrick our new drummer thanks to a mutual friend in Switzerland a few months ago, we immediately hooked and when I separated from our first drummer last month, it had become obvious that he would take his place, which he did with insane talent.
How long have you been playing as a band?
Ever since I was 13 so it’s been nearly 40 years on! Fuck! That’s a bloody long time, must be a dinosaur!
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
Let’s get this right: the name has nothing to do with the movie! I thought of the name as a futuristic evolution of mankind. We are in year 4600 and earth is no longer the only place we live. We live on planet earth but work on the moon, we go on holidays on Mars, etc…Imagine the traffic jams on rush hours in space and I got the name Spacejam. But you can also see it that way: I needed a very special jam to spread on my space cake when in Amsterdam and this is where I got the name. Pick your own!
What are your influences?
I have so many musical influences…The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, all the UK and US Punk bands (Sex Pistols, Damned, Clash, Ruts, UK Subs, Ramones, Television, DK, Dead Boys, Bad Brains…) Siouxsie & Banshees, The Cure, Joy Division, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Queen Of the Stone Age…
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We spread a powerful and melodic rock with poetic and dreamlike lyrics. We are a power trio and on stage, the songs are much more powerful and they literally rock your socks off and blow your mind away. On stage, we go straight to the point, no time to beat around the bush. Our audience takes a one-way trip to escape and change of planet. Welcome to our world! We are spacejam and we have come from a faraway planet to rock your world!
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
What inspired this album the most is human relationships and love stories in every sense of the word, from start to finish and also after the breakup, the state in which we can find ourselves and also everything we can think of the other, the relationship, memories etc …
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
We are a power trio and on stage the songs are much more powerful and they literally rock your socks off and blow your mind away. On stage, we go straight to the point, no time to beat around the bush. Our audience takes a one-way trip to escape and change of planet. Welcome to our world! With Spacejam, we have played more or less 50 shows before we got stopped by this shit!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
It was during a concert with my band Bikini in the 90’s and someone in the audience threw a can of beer right on the neck of my guitar while I was singing and it was in the middle of a song, I spotted the guy who threw the can put my guitar down and I went down to the audience and broke the face of this twat in front of everyone. The funny thing was, the rest of the band carried on playing as if nothing had happened.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
I use two main guitars the first is a Guild Starfire IV modified with two ES 335 Gibson Pickups and the second main guitar is a Fender Jaguar Kurt Cobain signature. I also use a Fender Telecaster S Series from 1976 US-made I also have an acoustic guitar a Dorado by Gretsch from 1972 made in Japan witch sounds like a beauty.
I Play through a VOX AC 30 C2X but I am changing amps to an Orange Custom Shop 50 amp with a PPC 2X12 or 4X12 I have not decided yet.
What are your plans for 2020?
We are working on new songs (I have another 30 songs in stock) and thinking of different ways to bring our music to our audience. I’m shooting the video clip for our song Stay Alive. I created all the sets and the story. I will direct and edit the clip for early July hopefully. You can find our new album Ten on all the current digital platforms and the CD is for sale on our website as well as on our Bandcamp.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
I would love to open for Foo Fighters or The Cure. I would love The Rolling Stones to open for us LMAO!!! More seriously I would love Charles In The Kitchen to open for us, they are good mates and a great Swiss band.
