Band of the Day: Barbara Black

You’re allowed to go on holiday there again now (hey, we read the news), so today we feature a band from Spain!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Madrid (Spain).

How did you meet?

We played in different bands some years ago and we used to rehearse in the same premises. We all had a very good relationship and common musical interests so we decided to start a band together.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Since 2015.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The band’s name is Barbara Black and in 2015 I decided to start my solo music career.

What are your influences?

We love bands such as Alter Bridge, Black Stone Cherry, Blues Saraceno, In This Moment, Mr Big, Halestorm and many more.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our sound is born from the roots of rock with the power of today’s metal. The new album Love, Death & Flies is our hardest sound that shows the lyrical influences of Poe, Bécquer and the horror cinema of the 80s. Victorian streets, dark passages and a decadent romanticism drive you to reach the zenith in “Damnified”, a reflection of the approach to wilder southern sounds. You will find powerful voices that flies through melodies, screaming and opera as well as sharp guitars and devastating drums.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

I really like to write about animal rights, experiences that have happened to me, such as paranormal experiences, a car accident or even being inspired by other artists’ works of art.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Our concerts are energetic and powerful, people jump, sing and have fun, and we enjoy together with them. Besides we try to make the show very artistic, carrying a show whenever possible.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I have always loved to mix the theater influence with the stage, so I have taken it to the stage acting with wings, dressed as a boxer, blood on my body and dancing choreographies with dancers.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I sing with Shure sm58 mic, DW drums and Turkish cymbals, Fender Jazz Bass, ESP and Ibanez guitars.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are currently promoting our new album Love, Death & Flies, which we’ve released in March. The reviews are being very positive and we are delighted with the result.

What are your plans for 2020?

We are going to play live the new tour dates and on the other hand we are also planning to record our next videoclip.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Difficult question, let’s see… the band we would love to be supporting is Alter bridge, In This Moment, or Doro. Furthermore the band we would choose to open for us is Corvus V (a Spanish rock band).
