Band of the Day: I Am Destruction

Nice and noisy today with some very heavy metal from cowboy country!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from all over the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

How did you meet?

I (Stephen) knew Paul and Richie from their previous band, Dead Rising. So, we already had music history together. I had a friend, Tyler Berry, introduce me to Buddy after I had mentioned wanting to make IAD a full band.

How long have you been playing as a band?

With our current line-up, we’ve been playing together for a little over 3-years.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

So, there are actually multiple answers for that. I’ll just stick with it has to do with the lyrical content.

What are your influences?

We pull influence from bands like: Morbid Angel, Origin, Dead Congregation, and Aborted.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I think it’s the fact that we meld together old school and new school. You can hear a lot of both in this album, so fans of both can dig it.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yes. This album is a continuation of the story of our EP, Violence Devours. It’s basically the story of Revelation from the viewpoint of: God as the malevolent entity, and the “Antichrist” being the protagonist. This album in particular is about his coming to being. Hence, the name, Nascency.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We’ve played a lot of local shows. I wouldn’t begin to count it. Our live shows are usually energetic! Paul and Richie are good at keeping the stage lively while I do vocals. Buddy brings the heat and keeps everyone’s heart beating.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I remember a few years ago at GMBG here in Dallas; there was a girl who took a shot of Jason Keyser’s sweat, for a shirt. It was not even a good shirt, either it was a misprint they were selling for $5 or something ridiculous. Grossest thing, ever.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Legator Guitars, Jackson Guitars, Kemper Amps, Peavey Amps, Vader Custom Cabinets, Bergantino Cabinets, Bergantino Amps, Darkglass b7k, Warwick Team Built Streamer, DW Drums, Meinl Cymbals, Trick Pedals.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Vader Cabinets have been awesome with Paul and I, and we couldn’t have asked for a better endorsement. Best cabs I have ever used.

What are your plans for 2020?

Well, being that COVID-19 has put a standstill on touring all over the world, we will most likely begin the writing process on the successor to Nascency.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

As far as opening for us, I’d have to say, one of our local homies. Demonseed, Necrosis, Reviled, or Renatus would be perfect! If it were a dream of mine, personally, I would love to open up for Morbid Angel or Cannibal Corpse. Some old school bands that I have been jamming since I was a kid.
