Band of the Day: Up The Bug

Another band from Bristol’s burgeoning music scene take to our safe, online, quarantined stage today…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Bristol, currently living in a cabin with a home studio for the lockdown.

How did you meet?

Jimbo (drums) saw us performing at Lake Fest last year and said he wanted to be our drummer, we gave him an audition and now he’s joined the family. Max Lee (Guitar) saw Yaj (Vocals, Guitar) busking on the street and asked him to come and play some gigs for him. Max Flenley (Keys) and Max Lee went to primary school together and later reconnected at music college. Now we are one big happy family.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We’ve been a band for one year.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

You won’t be able to print this article if we tell you.

What are your influences?

We all love all different types of music but some acts that influence the music we make are… Sublime, Sticky Fingers, Black Roots

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We combine elements of disco, dance, ska and rock to make riddims that make you skank for weeks, sometimes months at a time.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Whatever is topical in our lives at the time. Booze, living on the road, booze, making love, booze, being skint all the time and not being able to afford booze.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Lots of stage diving and breaking of equipment that we can’t afford.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Yaj had a fight with a soundman because he said he was holding the microphone incorrectly. Max Flenley smashed his keys over a bouncer’s head when he wouldn’t let him nick a cigarette. Max Lee got kicked out of our show for driving the van into the smoking area. Jimbo got us kicked off a coach en route to a Berlin show because he ate the drivers food.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Nords, Fenders, Faiths & APEX.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We dropped a new single at the start of April called “Killin’ Time”. It’s on youtube and all about finding positive light in the current Covid-19 situation. We have a new song that will be released next month in May that will be featuring some local legends from our hometown.

What are your plans for 2020?

Being legends from home.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We would love to support Bob Marley and have The Beatles open for us.
