Band of the Day: Pyraweed

New territory today as we hit Azerbaijan for – I believe – the first time!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Baku, Azerbaijan.

How did you meet?

We’ve been friends for ages and played in different projects together. We still do.

How long have you been playing as a band?

I (Nijat Hasanzadeh) created Pyraweed in 2015 and cooperated with different musicians. After a short pause in 2019, I invited Zakir Gasimov to the band and we realised that we can make great stuff together.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

I had a vision of a pyramid made of weed.

What are your influences?

Black Sabbath, Sleep, Om, Tool, Meshuggah.

Describe your music.

It’s difficult to describe my own music because it represents myself, my soul. Would be easier if someone else from the outside does it.

What makes you unique?

I think it is our attitude towards the genre in which we play, the sound, our ideology, and the way we deliver our music.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Mostly it is about my psychedelic visions, dreams – rather nightmares – and personal experiences.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

They are usually in lots of green light and smoke. The audience dives into the immersive atmosphere we create. Is kinda hypnotic. I can’t really name the number of shows we’ve played, there’ve been too many.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Because of the fans going crazy at one of the shows, huge speakers installed on the scene crashed down, only centimetres away from one of the band members.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Yamaha drum set, Dw Pdp 13″x07″ Black Wax Snare, Istanbul Agop Xist and Samatya Cymbals. ESP LTD B-5E 5-String Bass, and lots of pedals.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

The end of the quarantine.

All going well and depending on the current situation, what are your plans for the rest of 2020?

We will continue working hard, just as we have always been.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I’d choose Ritual Service from Odessa to open for us, and I’d love to support Sleep.

From previous Band of the Day, N.E.S.H.:
At a local level, what do you think can be done to help the music industry and bands of the future?

More support and dedication.

From Fall Flavored: What would you do with an eleventh finger?

Advance jerking-off techniques.
