Band of the Day: Moaning Silence

Time for another lockdown Band of the Day, another one from the mighty land of Greece!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Athens, Greece.

How did you meet?

I know Harry since high school and 2 years ago I met our lead singer Eleftheria. The bass player, Antonis, joined the band a couple of years ago.

How long have you been playing as a band?

With the current members of the band we play since 2018, although Moaning Silence as an idea came up in my mind 6 years ago.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It just came up as an idea when I saw a card of a card game, I think “magic the gathering”, with an ethereal figure called “Moaning Spirit”. Immediately, I checked it on the Internet and I realised there was already a band with that name. So I changed it to Moaning Silence, even better!

What are your influences?

The atmospheric metal sound of the 90’s, almost lost nowadays, is our beacon. Bands like Anathema, Theatre of Tragedy, Paradise Lost and Tiamat gave us great inspiration in order to create our own music.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I would describe Moaning Silence as an atmospheric metal band with a few doom – gothic elements. Although it’s hard to create a unique sound, I think that melancholy and nostalgia characterise our music.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Anything that has to do with emotions, human thoughts, religion, love and the battle between good and evil is an inspiration for us. As I said before, you can find melancholy almost in every song.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Unfortunately, due to a number of reasons, we haven’t done a live show yet. We are looking forward to get on the stage this autumn.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I will let you know as soon as we get on the stage!!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I never leave my Epiphone Les Paul custom model!

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are very glad to announce that our new full length album A Waltz Into Darkness came out on May 5th by Symmetric Records. At this moment I would also like to refer to Bob Katsionis (Outloud, ex-Firewind), a precious partner. Without his help and support all of these would have never come true.

What are your plans for 2020?

We would like to create more music, come up with more inspiration and do as many live shows as we can.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Without second thoughts, I would choose Lake of Tears. Even if we play just one song before they hit the stage, it would be enough for me. As for the opening band, I would prefer something more evil and brutal like Arkhangelsk, check them out!
