Band of the Day: Theraphosa

We’re popping this one up to coincide with Theraphosa’s new album release which is… today!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Paris, France.

How did you meet?

Vincent and Matthieu are brothers and Martin is Matthieu’s oldest friend, they know each others since their early childhood.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We’ve been together since 2007.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The name Theraphosa is taken from the world’s largest spider also known as Theraphosa Blondi. Apart from Vincent’s passion for spiders, the band sees in this animal a symbol of freedom, determination and adaptation.

What are your influences?

Our influences are quite large, it goes from black metal to classical music and electronic music. Thus, we are as much influenced by artists like Gorgoroth and Meshuggah as we are by Beethoven or Gesaffelstein.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We do not try to fit into a particular music category. However, we give as much importance to the physical feel of the music as to the atmosphere of it. So for us, our music is a blend of groove and darkness.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We draw our inspiration from philosophical topics, theological studies and many other things that make us think in depth on the human condition, its relation to its congeners and the world surrounding it.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Our live shows are like a ceremony, there isn’t much movements, some people describe them as cold. We are the kind of musicians who are very focused on what we do on stage, because we strongly value the quality of live performances. Furthermore, the fact of being only three guys on stage doesn’t give us much time to run across it as we are pretty busy playing.

We have played a decent amount of gigs but we have never done large tours so we are not the band with the highest number of shows under our belt.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Meshuggah live show is wild and impressive. It is a true humbling experience.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Vincent uses Gibson and ESP guitars, EMG pickups, EVH amps, D’Addario strings and Dunlop picks.

Matthieu uses Warwick basses, Ampeg amps, Darkglass pedals and Warwick strings.

Martin uses Yamaha drums (22’’, 12’’, 13’’, 16’’), Trick Drums pedals, EVANS Drumheads and Vic Firth sticks.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are about to release our debut album called Transcendence which is scheduled for release on April 24th, 2020. It will be distributed by Season of Mist and available on all digital platforms.

What are your plans for 2020?

We plan to release our album and hopefully tour as soon as possible !

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Opening for Meshuggah would be an honor for us and any French metal band would be welcome as the opener !
