Band of the Day: robots and gods

Canada has a burgeoning rock and metal scene, and today we have yet another act to come from it – on the day they release their new single…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Vancouver, Canada

How did you meet?

Tyson met Greg and Ryan at an all-ages rock show back in high school. Jerry put out an ad looking for a drummer and a guitarist, and they responded. They later met Bogdan when he replied to their add looking for a vocalist.

How long have you been playing as a band?

All five members started writing music together three years ago, and we started performing two years ago.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The name came from one of our relatives. Their idea was that the robots represent all of the worlds workers, day after day doing the work that make society function. The gods represent the extremely wealthy people that don’t need to work, but can travel and experience all of the world and its beauty. So, it’s about class, and it’s about technology, and the possibility that technology could disrupt our class system.

What are your influences?

Faith No More. Pearl Jam. Radiohead. System of a Down. Audioslave. New Order.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music is like a beautiful violin case, but inside it is a Tommy gun. Each of us has a unique style of playing and writing. There is a shared respect, as well as a love for experimentation and improvisation, but our true chemistry shines when we get into a room together and hack out a new song.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We want the lyrics to be relatable, they are about everyday people in the everyday world.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We like to play with energy. We are a five piece, so we have a big sound, but we still want to create space and quieter intimate moments as well.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Fights, nudity, drunkenness and flying undergarments of course! Our favourite moments are when something unexpected happens. Once we performed at this casino, and this couple did ballroom dancing to our entire set. Another time we have had a group of a dozen women get up and start line-dancing, which is odd because our music is the furthest thing from country you could imagine. Both nights were great, and the crowds went nuts!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Ryan has an early ‘90’s Bright Red Tama Rockstar DX 6 piece kit and uses various cymbal brands. Greg plays mostly Gibson and Prestige guitars. We don’t have any sponsors at the moment, but we are open to that, especially our bass player Jerry, who dreams about being sponsored by Fender basses and Markbass Bass Amplifiers.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

The release of our single “More” on April 3rd. We worked with some amazingly talented people on it, and we are very proud of the way it turned out. Please have a listen!

What are your plans for 2020?

2020 is a big year for us, we have spent the last three years planning and preparing for it. First up is the release of our single “More”, on April 3rd, which is the first song from our upcoming debut EP. We also recently shot our first music video, which we will be releasing soon. Our first tour is in the planning stage right now, and we are super excited to get a chance to perform in some new cities and regions.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We love Faith No More. So much so, that three of us flew to New York to see them perform. It was a bonding experience, and it lead to us starting this band. So, we would love to play on the upcoming Faith No More and Korn tour, please let them know that we are available. Oh, and we don’t mind being the opening band.

There are a lot of great musicians in Vancouver, and there is a fantastic music scene there right now. We feel lucky to have had the opportunity to meet and perform with some really great bands. Unfortunately, female musicians often get less representation in the media. So, for this article we are only going to give shout outs to Vancouver bands that feature women, go check them out!

Emily Molloy, Raincity, the Escapes, Ria Jade, Fallen Stars, Strange Breed, the C U Next Tuesdays, and Zoey Leven.
