Band of the Day: Jordan Red

We showed you Jordan Red’s new video recently, and thought it would be nice to hear a bit more about the band. Courtesy of vocalist Daniel Leigh, here we go…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

London

How did you meet?

We met at a barbecue being held by a mutual friend.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The band is only just out of the gates, so we are pretty much brand new but the project began about 2 years ago.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Well, Dan and I are very into personal development. We have similar work ethics (although Dan never ceases to amaze me how switched on he is 24/7!).

We wanted to create a character with the band name. We wanted the band to stand for something. Truth, growth, resilience etc. So we went about naming the band much like parents name a child. We looked at people and works of art the were relevant to both of us. We looked at movies, self help gurus, philosophers etc. that had influenced us. A teacher who we both have taken many lessons from is the clinical psychologist Dr Jordan Peterson. This is where Jordan came from. A movie which we both reference almost on a daily basis is The Matrix. The idea of the “red pill” and awakening to harsh truths to grow stronger resonated with us both. This is where Red came from. And so the character Jordan Red was born.

What are your influences?

I’m influenced primarily by the early 90s grunge movement. Nirvana changed my life as a teen. I have always admired singers like Freddie Mercury, Steven Tyler and Robert Palmer for their creative ability and the ease in which they command an audience. Some more modern influences of mine are the likes of Shinedown, Alter Bridge, Don Broco Five Finger Death Punch and Stone Sour.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Dan is into a lot of heavier music than I am I think but when we get together we produce very profound pieces of work. The level of detail we have vowed to go into for the sake of our art in Jordan Red is something that is a massive leap forward for both of us. We are sure that the people who connect with us will recognise that. We aren’t a band that is interested in churning out anything less than our best at every step.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Personal growth and encouraging strength and toughness in a world that seems like it is losing it’s mind. Plus, disdain for the lies of the political systems of the world and the mainstream media.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We are fresh out of the oven so we haven’t even had a live show yet but check out our video for Beautiful Monsters and you’ll see the energy we will be unleashing on stage.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Hmmmm… I have many a story to tell but this one has just come to mind…

In the early 2000s I was in a band playing barfly in Camden. It was a highly energetic performance that we put on every night. Our bassist Ian Reese (due to be married next week—congratulations guys!) made it a habit to jump off of the bass drum at the drop of the intro to the final song of the set. It transpired that the legs of the bass drum were not extended, the bass drum moved from underneath him and he landed very awkwardly breaking the tibular and fibular on his right leg. I looked over to my right, thinking that he had just slipped over and thought he was laughing! The music was so loud that we could not hear that he was screaming!

Our drummer stopped playing first realising that something had gone terribly wrong and then we heard him scream ‘FUCK! I’VE BROKEN MY LEG!’ I rushed over to him and and held his leg in place so the bones didn’t pierce through the skin. I then held it in place until the paramedics arrived…

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I use Shure and Line 6 microphones. My vocal effects unit is by TC Helicon and my in ear monitoring system is by Sennheiser. Dan uses Kemper amps, ESP and PRS guitars.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are currently promoting our debut single “Beautiful Monsters”. The video has just been released and is making a lot of noise already. We are very proud of what we have made here. We know people will enjoy it too!

What are your plans for 2020?

We will be releasing two more singles and videos in the run up to our debut album Hands That Built The World.  And of course, hitting the road!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I think I would die happy if we were main support to Shinedown. I think their audience would really understand and connect with us! A band you should all check out is Killit. They are phenomenal musicians and songwriters. I’ve shared a stage with them many times, they never disappoint!
