Band of the Day: Lucifour M

Italy, today, to check out a quartet who produce something a little funkier than we usually feature…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Romagna – north east of Italy – but we used to move a lot. Berlin… London… world… We don’t feel stuck anywhere.

How did you meet?

Marco and I started talking about this L4m thing at a gig 2 years ago maybe…maybe more. But it took some time to take off with Lucifour M.

How long have you been playing as a band?

1 year ago more or less. We used to play in other bands and projects like M+A or Amycanbe.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It is an evil name! Coming from a Lucifer Sam song mixed up with the idea that our names all start with M.

What are your influences?

It is difficult to describe something that is proper, especially in a case like ours where the songwriting part is almost completely improvised in jam sessions live. We are also listeners ourselves. First of all there is the immediacy of a song that is formed with intuition and rhythm strokes of a moment. We pick up Neptunes, Rex Orange County, Bert Bacharach, jazz elements, Lou Reed… but Tommy Cash, Rejjie Snow, with whom one of us has collaborated in other projects, also influence us. We also come to metal, which has its own hidden and therefore unavoidable grace.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Us.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We write in jam: the first entry is so unconscious. The lyrical themes are very biographical, so we go from mental disorders to relationships, but there is always a “macro” component: the splendor of misfortune. There is no pessimism. An ego speaks, but it must be thought almost like the caves of cave paintings: they were caves, very small, like an ego – only one, in fact, could enter – but they were at the same time an aspect of the sky, they were also cosmic caves where the continuous shapes and, above all, where the designer was the same as the one that was drawn, the right line.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Amazing? (Noel Gallagher cit.)! We played just a few so far… but we are adding a lot.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Some of them cannot be said, there are also dispensations which require silence. However, I often sing with my eyes closed and once I fell off the stage while singing. There is also to say that we went out between the end of 2019 and this 2020, so the best is yet to come.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

We use Roland Juno 60/106, Jx8p, M1, Moog, sampler, Dx7. As for guitars… a purple Fender Stratocaster, Les Paul and Shergold. Bass – a Fender precision… I stop because it would become too nerd!

What are your plans for 2020?

Playing more and more… The Great Escape Festival, film soundtracks, a new EP, new videos… a lot of stuff. We are getting crazy!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

  • Orange Combutta (I (Michele) and Mattia play in this wonderful 12-piece band. It would be more of a party than an opening band)
  • Us
  • Connan Mockasin
