Our final Band of the Day for 2019! Take it away, Dirty Machine…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
- David Leach – (vocals) from Kansas City, MO
- Kevin Hicklin – (guitar) from Virginia
- Mike Weekly – (drums) from Kalamazoo, MI
- DJ Ecusa – (DJ) from Los Angeles, CA
- Mark Dalbeth (bass) from New Zealand
How did you meet?
We met from friends of friends. It was totally by chance. Wasn’t even supposed to happen but it did.
How long have you been playing as a band?
Dirty Machine has been pissing off the Sunset Strip and numerous other cities across the country since December of 2012.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
When we were deciding the band name, the only thing that made sense was “something Machine.” Mostly because we only could function when we were all together. If one of us missed practice, the energy just wasn’t there. The “Dirty” part later came because we were all foul mouthed, nu-metal kids.
What are your influences?
Our influences range all across the spectrum. We all have different favourite bands, different backgrounds. We could name 10-15 bands off the top of our head. That’s what makes this project so different. You can’t pinpoint just one band.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Our music is unique because it’s uncommon for today’s standard. We are trying to reprise a genre that most critics pronounced dead 20 years ago. The thing about this band that is unique is, you either love us or hate us. That is nu-metal.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
I don’t go into the writing process with a theme in mind. My lyrics come from the top of my head. I don’t know what an instrumental will turn into until I hear it. My lyrics could range from heartbreak, a bad day or just a straight up vulgar banger!
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Our live shows is honestly what’s helped spread the name all across the world. The live show is where we leave it all on the table. The thing that makes our genre so great is the pure, raw energy of it in person. If you can’t feel the five guys on stage, jumping and stomping around to down tuned, drop B nu-metal, then we have failed.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Back in 2017, when we were on tour in Insane Clown Posse on the highly acclaimed “Great Milenko” anniversary tour. We were at our stop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The entire set a couple was having sex to our music. They were front row on the rail. At first I thought they were dry humping. But about three songs in, I realized they were actually having sex. Coolest set ever.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
We have a huge show at the world famous Whisky a Go Go, Saturday Jan 4th.
What are your plans for the rest of 2019 and into 2020?
We want to take over the world.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
Hands down we would open for Limp Bizkit, and for our opening act we would love to have our road warrior homies in the Mendenhall Experiment. Some of the hardest working guys in the game.
