Band of the Day: The Crooked 45

Saturday night’s a night to party. So why not do it with The Crooked 45…?

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are all originally from the Reading area.

How did you meet?

Me and Hag met at secondary school and I met Sam 3/4 years ago through friends.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We have been a band for about a year and a half now.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We were away for a weekend in Prague getting on it and we saw you could rent out an Alpaca for the day, for 45 Euros. Which we tried to do but they wouldn’t let us thankfully. So originally we were going to be called Alpaca 45.

After sobering up we realised that wasn’t the best idea and went with ‘The Crooked’ which is much better and an anti trump/nazi movement by coincidence taking in consideration the tone of our lyrics.

What are your influences?

Many genres from rock, blues, metal, punk… I’d say key bands for us are The Clash, Nirvana, Sex Pistols.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We definitely have our own sound, that is clear live.

Our music is raw, driving, energetic and our lyrics are politically astute. We aren’t singing about getting dumped or trying to become famous, couldn’t give a shit.

We want to talk about matters… that matter and have fun along the way.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yep! Generally about various atrocities that are happening around the globe or the vice grip the powers in the western world have on some of the public using certain media outlets as a mouthpiece… culture of fear. That kind of thing.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Only a handful, to date. They have all been busy, or sold out. We are buzzing about that.

We give it everything when we get on stage, that’s cliché but we do.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Lead singer of the Dillinger Escape Plan shit himself on stage at Reading festival, threw it in the crowd, they threw it back and he smeared it all over himself…nuts literally!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Sam plays Gretsch drums, Zildjian and Paiste cymbals.

Hag uses an Orange valve head and Orange cab plus plays a Gibson les Paul.

I play a Fender Jaguar bass use a Laney Nexus valve amp and an 8 by 10 Ampeg cap but I get my sound through a Darkglass Microtubes B7K V2 Analogue bass preamp.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are plugging our new single ‘voices on the radio’ OUT NOW in all stores and on all platforms wink wink.

What are your plans for 2019?

Just to continue releasing music and playing live.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Of course there are loads of gigs/Tours we’d love to be on and bands we admire/respect but no one really in particular that we are desperate to support. I guess it comes down to who’s got the biggest crowd haha? Foo fighters or an oasis reunion show would be nuts on the other hand.

We played with a band at the Underbelly called Longy and the Gospel Trash. Really good band. They could open for us any time or we’ll support them whatever.
