Band of the Day: State of Deceit

Up here in Glasgow we have a holiday week. I’m using it to soak up some new bands. Here’s another one…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

All over South Wales,  takes us a collective 4 hours travelling time just to meet up!

How did you meet?

Matt W and Jon have known each other for a couple of years, playing in different bands originally on the same gigs. It took some time to find all the right members to fit the style and direction the band wanted and we have to thank internet ads for helping discover Matt T and Pete .

How long have you been playing as a band?

About 18 months as the current line up.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We went back and forth for several months, looking for the right name, once we came up with State of Deceit it resonated on a couple of levels with the different interpretations, both of which we reflect in our lyrics.

What are your influences?

Lots of the usual popular metal bands in the genre: Pantera, Architects, Slayer, BMTH some less obvious: Stampin’ Ground, Kill2This, Wil haven. But at the moment, what’s really exciting us is the South Wales metal scene, there is a lot of quality bands which are providing us with new inspiration.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

The band mix distorted guitars, thumping drums, with clean and growling vocals. We blend the best of old school thrash and groove vibes with newer school guttural and catchy vocals. Creating our own harmonies and breakdown riffs that make you bang your head and crave the pit.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

On Retribution we’ve talked a lot about the current political climate in the ‘State of Deceit’ and different consequences that arise. The other major topic on the EP is mental health which can quite often be when you’re in a ‘State of Deceit’ about the reality facing you.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Intense and exploding with energy, we bring everything we’ve got to give something people can really remember! We’ve played 100s of shows individually but about 30 as ‘State Of Deceit’

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Not sure about wild, but this one time Pete, while being overly exuberant on stage has fallen over right into the drums half way through a song!  Despite audible crowd laughter he finished like a Pro. It’s on our facebook if you want to watch!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Wireless as much as possible, once you’ve had the freedom on stage you can’t go back! Jon uses a Schecter Hellraiser C-1 into an EVH Head, Matt W uses a Jackson JS2 Concert Bass and Behringer Head and Matt T’s using pots and pans because he’s in the market, while using Meinl cymbals and Pearl Eliminator double pedals.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We’re releasing our debut EP Retribution on 6th December via all the usual platforms, you can listen to our debut single “Vengeance” on YouTube now! With the full video for “Vengeance” releasing 26/11/19.

What are your plans for the rest of 2019?

Release Retribution December 6th! Playing some more shows around the UK, filming another video – we’re currently scoping out locations. Finish writing off some new songs for the next recording session in spring next year.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Our good friends Sepulchre to open and as headliners Pantera. We’ll let you figure out the details of where, etc.
