Band of the Day: Swarm of Serpents

As the weekend appears over the horizon, we feature a band from far off over the western one…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Tucson, Arizona US.

How did you meet?

We meet in shows, parties and metal shows.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Well the band start like a solo man project by Cesar Ortiz aka Malleus Serpent in 2011 recording the first album called Souls ov Hell in 2015 under Deathcult Records from Peru. In 2017 Malleus Serpent decides to recruit musicians to play live shows and record the most recent EP called Where the Serpents Dwell (2019) under Old Records Mexico. So as a band we have 3 years playing.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The name of the band comes from the ideologies that were taken when reading books about occultism and paganism over the years, because for us the serpent symbolizes the darkest of the human being and is also directed with the theme of the band.

What are your influences?

Our influences come from different metal styles like Iron Maiden, Necrophobic, Dissection, Naglfar, Dark Funeral, Belphegor… to name a few.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music, as already mentioned, comes from the influence of European bands especially. We go from the most extreme to the most melodic rhythms, but still playing our own touch or feeling, so for that reason it makes it unique.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yes, we are focused on the issues of occultism, paganism, satanism and darkness.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

In our shows we try to transmit everything we feel and what is embodied in our lyrics and music. We have around 30 shows so far, opening for big bands like Belphegor, Goatwhore, etc. The most recent was our participation in Metaldays festival in Tolmin, Slovenia as well as a show in Spain last July.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

The craziest we have seen in a show was to see how some dudes were carrying a beer barrel and filling the beer glasses of the other spectators throughout the venue. This happened at Metaldays!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

We use LTD/ESP guitars, Ibanez bass guitars, Tama drums, Blackstar and EVH guitar amps, Fender bass amps.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

For now we are promoting our most recent EP called Where the Serpents Dwell, as well as our next show in december with Nile and Terrorizer here in Arizona, US.

What are your plans for the rest of 2019 and into 2020?

For 2019 play the show with Nile and Terrorizer and start to write new music, and for 2020 we’re gonna start a west coast tour in U.S in January.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We would totally support Deadspawn, one of our brother bands, because we have already toured with them in Mexico and it was a very good experience. To open a show for us we would choose CRS (cirrosis) and Capricornus Tenebrarum.
