Our thanks to Leo Robarts (vocals/guitar) and Piers Mortimer (guitar/piano) from Sweet Crisis for taking the time to answer our questions…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Leo: Cambridge
How did you meet?
Piers: Leo and I met at school, think around 14 years old! So we’ve been mates for a few years now!
How long have you been playing as a band?
L: Playing as Sweet Crisis for a couple of years. But me and Piers have been writing songs and playing together for more than 10 years!
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
P: Well, it’s actually a old song title we had. The songs was cool, but never made it any so we grabbed it. Also, some people that really know us will say… I’m the ‘Sweet’ and Leo’s the ‘Crisis’!
What are your influences?
L: Bands like FREE, Black Keys, Hendrix, Gary Clark Junior and Humble Pie
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
P: Blues-Soul-Rock all in one.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
L: We love playing that certain style of old rock n’ roll that’s hard to do. Full soul rock vocals with high energy, so the lyrics range from everyday stuff to the abstract – whatever we want really which is always fun and exciting to create
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
P: Loads! Love playing gigs. As for the show, if you like loud guitars and banging melodies and beats, you’ll always be at home at our shows.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
L: I think seeing the Red Hot Chilli Peppers getting naked and rocking out is pretty nuts!
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
P: I’m very lucky to be endorsed by PRS guitars so I play those gorgeous axes!
L: I prefer the more scratchy Fender sound and feel to be a little less perfect and more honest. Adds to the modern smooth tones of the pro that Piers uses.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
P: Our brand new shiny single “Black Magic” – it’s very good, have a listen… you’ll love it!
What are your plans for 2019?
L: Play Out – Record – get loose!
P: Playing some great festivals this summer, and finishing off the run at Ramblin’ Man Festival in July, then hopefully touring end of the year and maybe a US tour too!
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
P: I mean that’s hard! Support the Rolling Stones, because well… it’s the Stones right?
L: I’d love to support Rival Sons as I think our voices would go well together. And to support us – anyone who is passionate and loves the blues!
