A live instrumental solo act that’s outgrown the studio and headed out onto the stage, The Last Cell is today’s Band of the Day…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

I (Jean-Marc Perc) am from Carinthia/Austria and so is Florian Lukas (Bass) and Robin Weber (Drums) is from Vienna

How did you meet?

Florian and I met when we were young, we basically grew up together. After deciding that I want to take The Last Cell to the stage I was searching for a drummer. I asked Norbert Leitner – my go-to studio guy and dear friend if he knows a good drummer. Robin was the first name that came up and I am really glad it did.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The Last Cell is a solo-project that started in 2017. My first release was in 2018 and in 2019 I had the live-setup complete.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It just made sense for me. The name to me carries everything I want to convey with my music. I just love science and nature. That is also basically the main theme of it. It’s the story of somehow everything from the origin of existence, the fight of survival to the point where the last cell will perish and thus concluding the end of the thing we call life.

What are your influences?

Every genre I listen to influences me – hip-hop, pop, rock, indie-rock and so on, because there are so many great musicians out there. On the progressive metal end, it would be acts like Intervals, Plini, Animals as Leaders, who I would love to share a stage with.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I think I found my style when I stopped to think what kind of music I want to make and just treated every idea I have as a part of it. That’s why it sometimes for example is really melodic turning into something heavy then back to something beautiful and so on. It progresses through a lot of emotions. I think it’s hard to predict what comes next.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Only one until now but we are looking forward playing 2 shows in the end of June in Vienna and Graz. Our shows are a lot of fun for us and I think our audience feels the same. It’s just such a great vibe that I have with those two goofballs. I can count myself lucky that I have two really gifted musicians and awesome human beings on my side.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Nothing wild yet – but hey it’s me so I guess it’s only a matter of time!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I record and play live with my Fractal Audio Axe FX-II Amp. My main-guitar is my Ibanez RGA 420Z 7-string guitar and for some lead-stuff I also use my Musicman Silhouette.

What are your plans for 2019?

I just released my new EP Continental Drift and dropped my first video of the song “Thengana”. More videos will be released – we plan on playing as many live shows as possible and I am already working on the third EP.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
