You don’t see much on the noise rock front from us but when we do, we always love it. Here’s SUE for you.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We come from the West Midlands, England.
How did you meet?
I (Elliot here) met Ashley (guitar) at an audition for a previous band. Euan (drums) I found on Facebook, and he brought in his brother Harry (bass).
How long have you been playing as a band?
As this current line-up a year and a bit, SUE’s been going since September 2016.
Before you get sick of being asked… Where does the band name come from?
Johnny Cash’s “A Boy Named Sue”. I love the man in black, he got me into songwriting. I had to pay tribute to him somehow.
What are your influences?
I’m a big fan of hardcore/punk/poise rock/post-punk. Metz, Pissed Jeans, Iceage, Leathermouth, Nirvana, Black Flag. The list goes on.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Imagine the musical equivalent of an elephant fighting to the death against a pack of hyenas. That get’s pretty close to our sound.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Pain, distress, mental illness, existentialism and screaming at myself in the mirror.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
I can’t give an exact number. Our shows are pretty hectic and wild, I’ve been knocked over a couple times by the bassist and I once accidentally stepped on his face.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Our bass player seems committed to smashing his bass on the ground over and over again at the end of our set.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
I use a Squire Jazzmaster, light little thing that plays like a charm. I plug that into a Boss ME-*80 Multi-effects pedal and that all goes into a fender amp. Does the job nicely.
What are your plans for 2019?
Well, I’m trying to promote our debut album at the moment, and I’m hoping we can start working with a label and get some bigger shows across the country.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
I’d love to support Metz, I’ve been a fan of theirs for a long time. I’d have The Butter Aliens open for us, great little garage punk band from Birmingham.
