Band of the Day: Sonic Sky

Cleveland, home of the Browns, the Indians, the Monsters, the Gladiators, the Fusion… and Sonic Sky.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Cleveland, Ohio

How did you meet?

Most of us have known each other since high school. Our guitar player James we met through friends.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The band formed in 2018. It started as a solo project for lead singer/songwriter Brian Teubl and blossomed into a full band leading to the recording of the EP TREMORS.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

The name was an idea based on how stellar nature is, especially the sky.

What are your influences?

Deftones, Steven Wilson, Nirvana, Green Day, Van Halen, Red Sun Rising, Foo Fighters, Hum.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

A mix of hard rock and punk. It’s like taking our influences and putting them in a blender. We just like making good rock songs not looking to conform to what is going on at the moment.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Some lyrical themes are overcoming being bullied, feeling alone and isolated on the song “Tremors”. The first single “One or the Other” is about making choices whether it be in a relationship or decisions every day in life. The song “Hollow Heart” is about greed. The song “Call Me Chaos” is about how chaotic life can be, coming from the point of view of Chaos itself.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We are a pretty new band and we’re in the process of putting some gigs together this summer.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

During a live show in one of Brian and James’ prior bands we blew the sound system during a song. Once they got it back up running we just picked up where we left off like nothing happened!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Use a PDP & DW drum kit and Sabian Cymbals. We use Fender, Peavey and ESP guitars and Fender Bass. Marshall and Line 6 Amps.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are promoting our debut EP Tremors currently. This album came out November 16, 2018.

What are your plans for 2019?

We aim to play some shows, get some more exposure and hope to get our music out to more people!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d love to support Red Sun Rising if on a three-band bill. They are another band from Ohio that has been making some waves in the rock world lately.

A band we’d choose to open for us would be honeymoon from Norwalk, Ohio. They are a heavy band with a sound reminiscent of Hum.
