Band of the Day: Climate of Fear

With an album out last month, Climate of Fear have a lot to talk about…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

All over the UK: the midlands, Southampton and Scotland.

How did you meet?

From playing shows together in other bands mostly and having a common interest in playing a slightly different style of music from our previous bands.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Our first show was February 2018!

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

When we wrote the lyrics for the first EP most of the subject matter was around societal problems caused by the global economic system aka capitalism, and the way the ruling elites play off different groups against each other so they aren’t faced with a united opposition. So the band name was to capture that feeling.

What are your influences?

A whole range of different metal and hardcore would be the main influence in the songwriting, bands like At The Gates, All Out War, Behemoth and Irate would probably be a good mix of what we’re into, but also listening to music outside of our genre area tends to influence us a lot, especially in the lyrical themes and the way we put across our message.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We just try to write the music that we want to hear! So I guess any uniqueness will come from our music being the result of 5 individuals tastes and preferences, different from any other 5 individuals I think! It’s hard to pin down a particular genre label or anything so I guess it’s just metal and to know more you’d need to listen to the record or come see us live!

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

The running theme across our lyrics is the problems caused by the system of governance that runs the world. These problems reach into every corner of society and human life but they all come back to the same source: the capitalist mode of production exploits the hard work of the majority of people for the disproportionate benefit of a few people.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Come and see for yourself!

We’ve played about 50 or so shows in our first year across a range of different countries which has been a really amazing start to the band! We always want to play new places and meet new people and we’re glad to already have some plans locked in to do that again this year!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

We’ve played a few shows in Europe where the venue was definitely filled with a lot more people than the health and safety regulations would normally allow! It’s been pretty crazy to see sometimes a few hundred people packed into a space that should only allow like 50 or something and have everybody just going crazy!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Guitars and bass: mostly a range of different Ibanez models!

Amps: Kempers (the best invention ever!) and darkglass for bass!

Drums: Tama Star Classic and zildjian cymbals!

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We just realised our first full length album The Onset Of Eternal Darkness via Demons Run Amok Entertainment, which is out now on all streaming services and cd and vinyl!

What are your plans for 2019?

Play as many shows as possible! We’re playing some UK shows in March, some shows across France in April with our friends in Wolfpack and then heading to Finland in May! And that’s all I can talk about for now… more announcements coming soon!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Would love to play more shows with Revolve, one of the sickest bands in the UK and we haven’t played with them in a while! And then I know all of us and all of those guys would be happy to watch Behemoth every night for a month straight, so let’s go for that lineup!
