Band of the Day: Higher Ground

Time to get your rock on to today’s BotD, whose new video for “Stupid Thoughts” we premiered a couple of weeks ago…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re from a mixture of London and Essex.

How did you meet?

Elle (our drummer) and Dan (our bassist) knew each other from a previous band, and the rest of us were all found on the website Join my band.

How long have you been playing as a band?

4 of us have been together around 3 and a half years, and we’ve had Howard since summer 2018!

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Just from a little in joke with the band members, a fake ego trip where we’d all imply we were the better band member. It doesn’t even really make sense but we’re all quite weird!

What are your influences?

A Day to Remember, My Chemical Romance, Tonight Alive, Panic!, Blink, Hands like Houses, Good Charlotte, Thrice, Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce the Veil

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Any number of things! We have a broad range of influences that all fit under the rock umbrella and we try to mash them all together when we write. It means we struggle to decide what genre we actually are as a band… but it also makes us interesting, and hopefully we can appeal to a wider audience. We’re all also super duper buddies together, which hopefully comes through in the music.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Most of Chloe’s lyrics (most) are about real life people and situations. Also she seems to want to cram as many lyrics as possible into every song. It gets to the point of borderline rap.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Quirky, fun, energetic…and quirky again. We’ve played about 7 or 8 shows I think? Our first was September 2018.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

At one of our own shows the headline band (not us) set off a confetti cannon. That was pretty cool! Seen some bigger bands climbing up on the rafters and stuff too, that’s the dream. It’s fun to get down in with the crowd too.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Jack – PRS Guitars, Marshall amps, Seymour Duncan pickups, Jim dunlop picks and Ernie ball strings.

Howard – Fender guitars, Matchless amps, Bareknuckle pickups and Ernie ball strings.

Dan -Schecter bass, Trace elliot amps, EMG pickups, Jim dunlop picks and Ernie ball strings.

Elle – SJC custom kit, Zildjian cymbals, DW pedals, Vic Firth sticks and Remo drum heads.

Chloe – Her own voice and whatever microphone the venue gives her.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our first single “Stupid Thoughts” and its b-side (if you can call it that) which is called “Dreaming” we’re also currently recording 6 new tracks!

What are your plans for 2019?

Just to gig and tour and spend as much quality time with each other as possible. We want to build up our fan base and share our art with the world!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We probably would all give different answers for the band to headline, but I think Panic! At the Disco, makes a certain amount of sense for us as a shared liked band, and genre wise they fit fairly well. We’d probably pick Jack the Envious to open. They’re way further along than us though so we’d probably be the ones opening in reality! They’re amazing though, check them out for sure if you haven’t.
