Band of the Day: Roaring Truth

Nice to see a Craigslist ad with less creepy intentions can come to fruition…

How did you meet?

James Jones – We met through an ad on Craigslist. I had seen Marty’s ads that he was looking to form a band. It took me about 6 months to respond, but I finally did.

Marty Hill – He reached out to me, and we set a date to meet which I initially had to back out of. A friend of mine called me at the last minute and offered me 3rd row Rush tickets for free. Obviously, I had to go! Thankfully, JJ understood, and we wound up meeting at a Whataburger and hitting it off well.

How long have you been playing as a band?

MH – Roaring Truth began in 2015, however, our current roster came together in May of 2018.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

JJ – Marty told me he wanted to name the band Hard Truth. I liked the “Truth” part, but after I thought about it for a few days, I presented Marty with an alternative.

MH – JJ asked me if I had ever heard a Lion roar. I told him, “Not that I know of.” He said, “Man, the power in its roar is incredible!” So, considering our faith and our lyrical content, it was a no-brainer decision.

What are your influences?

JJ – Guns N’ Roses, Megadeth, Shinedown etc…

MH – 70s Aerosmith, early Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Tesla, 70 & 80s R&B

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

MH – If you look around, there is a loud cry for a return to melodic heavy metal. I’ve heard it called the New Wave of Classic Heavy Metal. We are a conglomeration of heavy metal, hard rock, acoustic rock, and what one producer called “chug rock”. When you listen to Roaring Truth, you will be taken on a roller coaster ride of sonic sound!

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

MH – We like to say our lyrics radiate with positive energy. We don’t perpetuate the stereotypical “gloom and doom” of most metal content. We tackle serious topics, but try and show the opportunities of hope and growth within them.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

MH – As I mentioned in the previous question, the Roaring Truth musical experience is an ebb and flow experience – we go fast, slow, up, down, and all the way around!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play /etc.?

MH – I play Gibson guitars, mainly. I have two Flying Vs, a Les Paul, and B.C. Rich Mockingbird. Amp-wise, I’m a Mesa Boogie guy!

What are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

MH – our self-titled EP, Roaring Truth. Check it out on Spotify, ITunes, etc… We’ve received a lot of airplay in Dallas/Fort Worth, so if you’re looking for some Texas-sized riffs – big, loud, and proud- check us out!

What are your plans for 2019?

MH – Playing live, recording new songs, and, hopefully, helping lead the revolution of a return to rock and metal to where it should be – on top!

If you were second on a three band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you?

JJ – I would like to be sandwiched in between Guns N’ Roses and Shinedown.

MH – I’ll go with Metallica and Bullet for my Valentine

What do each of you like to do on a night off when you aren’t working or playing music?

JJ – I unwind by watching movies, mainly. I love spending time with my son, too.

MH – I’m a family man, too, so I spend time with them. I also enjoy reading, playing with my dogs, and playing guitar. A day hardly ever goes by where I don’t touch my guitars.
