Band of the Day: Derelict Dream

The best Band of the Day answers come from bands who have a sense of humour. Spoilers: this is one of those ones.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Lou: Well, we’re all from the South end of the UK, but I was born in Berkshire and moved to Worthing about 7 years ago!

Scott: Rustycrutch (or Rustington if you want to use the Latin).

Ant: Littlehampton born and raised, didn’t spend a lot of my days on the playground though, I had a Mega Drive.

How did you meet?

Lou: I first met Scott at a house party in Littlehampton many moons ago, and I saw Ant quite a few times play down the local venue, back when his face was as barren as his head.

Scott: Found Ant in my garage smoking strange things with my brother and playing Metallica tunes if I remember rightly (I just joined in).

Ant: I met Scott back in the school days when I was new to bass (spoiler, I sucked!) We’d be jamming Metallica with his older brother on guitar, Scott would jump in on drums for pretty much all of it! Due to the age difference he was the only sober one so perfect for the drums! I met Lou before I joined the band, I was judging a battle of the bands which they won. A year later I joined. Fix!

How long have you been playing as a band?

Lou: Well I started Derelict about 6 years ago and there have been many incarnations of the lineup, but having Ant slapping that bass and Scott tearing it up on drums has definitely helped our sound mature!

Scott: I joined about 4 months ago.

Ant: I’ve been in the band for just shy of 3 years now, shortly after I joined a rock and roll covers band. I needed this to deal with the 12 bar fatigue!

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Lou: I had quite a time trying to come up with this one. I was trying to describe an idea of a dream that you can never escape from, like someone’s own personal hell that they can’t hide from anymore.

What are your influences?

Scott: Too many to mention, influences from every genre, but one of my favourites is Between the Buried and Me!

Ant: The most obvious ones in our music would have to be Opeth, Meshuggah, Devin Townsend and Gojira. Recently I think 12 Foot Ninja has steered us in a more chaotic direction and I’m always trying to bring it back with some Gama Bomb, but I don’t think its working (why cant we just write a song about pizza and Robocop already?).

Lou: The guys have pretty much summed it up. But I have been finding that I’ve been really getting into Leprous recently, their new album is amazing!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Scott: Ant’s hairdo! I’d probably say the fact we have sound of a 5 piece band with only 3 of us.

Ant: We like to layer the absolute shit out of our tracks with orchestral and electronic/synthetic stuff. So far we’ve managed to avoid the dub step bass drop cliché but maybe when the heat dies down on the concept? Just me? Ok, moving on…

Lou: With this kinda genre there are so many amazing bands out there, so it’s hard to be completely unique. But I think what makes us different is we aren’t afraid to go insane and try different things.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Ant: I stay out of that. I’m incapable of writing anything serious. That sentence is the closest you’ll get!

Lou: Most of my the lyrics are really about personal experiences. I just tend to describe them in metaphors so they sound pretty. The lyrics we have for our next e.p.’s are all based on the evolution of human ego.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Lou: Damn, that’s a tough one. Must be getting on for at least 100 by now.

Scott: I have a grand total of 0 so far, but soon 3 in 1 month so, you know, like buses!

Ant: Ooh quite a few, hard to count since I always get a few beers in!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Scott: I’m the drummer, nobody ever sees me! I finished a song with one stick, or had to pee quick in the intro to one song. That was fun!

Ant: We played a festival for a younger crowd back when I first joined. One kid dislocated his finger and refused to get it looked at till our set finished. Then there were kids doing the wall of death on rocking horses! I did not see that coming!

Lou: Have to agree with Ant on this one. That gig had some pretty funny moments. But they all seemed to love it!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Scott: At the moment I’m rocking a Gretsch with Taylor Hawking signature snare with Menil hardware (gotta love German engineering!).

Ant: I’ve got an Ibanez Btb 575. Bass. TC 250 bass head and Ashdown cab and Darkglass overdrive and super symmetry compression pedals. If I could procreate with anything in my house it would be all of them (and I often have pizza in the house so I don’t say that lightly).

Lou: At the moment I’m running my PRS 7 string through my lovely Kemper Profiler. So nice to not have to carry a huge clunky pedalboard anymore!

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Scott: The new Human EP. Watch out, it’s coming and coming strong.

Ant: Our new EP – Human. It’s taken a metric fuck ton of work to get this together and ready for the world so plug plug plug! With a few million Spotify listens I think I get a shiny penny! That’s my life goal right there!

What are your plans for 2019?

Scott: Make a loud noise and blow some ear drums! Gig the living piss out of the EP!

Ant: Gig the shit out of this and get to work on part 2 – Machine! We have some rough drafts of new songs for that and holy fuck they are gonna be a ball ache to learn. The tech continues to escalate. God help us!

Lou: Pretty much that, gigging recording and more gigging!
