Band of the Day: Latitudes

As the working week finally reaches its bitter end and two whole days of unfettered freedom approach, it’s time to dive into some new music courtesy of today’s Band of the Day…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and London, UK.

How did you meet?

Most of us were in active metal bands in the early 2000s, our paths crossed and a shared vision was pursued.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Since 2006.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

A random ‘ethereal’ word which gave us license to take the music in any direction we saw fit.

What are your influences?

On our new album: Fluisteraars, Gravenhurst, Low, Oranssi Pazuzu, Midlake, Harmonia, Alcest, Steve Hauschildt, Jackson C Frank, Genesis, Leonard Cohen, Amenra, Nick Drake, YOB, Slowdive, Converge, Radiohead, The Cure, Ash Borer, Nick Cave, etc.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

On the new album we’ve put our own spin on a few favourite underground metal genres and combined that with folk, indie and shoegaze songwriting. We’re also blessed to have a vocalist who has his own thing going on.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Dissolution, separation, wallowing in loss, sadness and melancholia.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We’ve maybe played 100 or so but have been out of the game the last few years for a number of reasons. I imagine when we tour the new album it will be more dynamic, less purely crushing, more space.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Done: probably fucked up a song and had a little cry afterwards. Seen: being in the crowd during Sick of it All at the Camden Underworld in 2003 was pretty interesting.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Mainly Gibson, Fender and Reverend guitars. Mapex drums, Zildjian cymbals, Evans heads, Vater sticks.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Album number 4 – Part Island– will be released April 5th 2019 on Debemur Morti Productions.

What are your plans for 2019?

We’re back in the rehearsal room and aim to take the record live as soon as possible. Hopefully that will extend further than just the UK.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

It would be cool to support YOB one day, maybe with an ultra-intense band like Turia as opener. A couple of us saw them live recently and heads were blown off.
