Band of the Day: Kaschalot

Ever used Skype? That comes from Tallinn in Estonia, a very lovely city that I had the pleasure of visiting some years ago. Sadly I didn’t get to catch Kaschalot when I was over there so let’s make them Band of the Day instead…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re all from Tallinn, Estonia.

How did you meet?

The power of internet and mutual friends.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Kaschalot started in 2014 as a solo project, but developed into a full band in 2016.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Kaschalot is the Slavic word for sperm whale. Since it’s a magnificent and colossal creature, we figured it represents quite well the mixed nature of our compositions.

What are your influences?

Pretty much everything rock and ambient related. Each of us brings something different to the table.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music is a perfect blend of melancholic and pop sounding melodies mixed with heavy guitar riffs and hard hitting drums patterns, complemented by diversified song structures.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

During our shows, we try to keep things energetic and technically tidy.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Probably those shows stick out, where everything is so random, you wish you could even bring your own electricity.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Fender guitars/basses, Orange/Peavey/EBS amps and a bunch of pedals.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

At the moment we’re promoting our debut LP Whale Songs which came out in October.

What are your plans for 2019?

To play as many gigs as humanly possible and bring our music to as many new people as possible.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

The opening act should be Mr Marcaille with his crazy cello metal and would be awesome to warm up for U2, so that we could be closer to The Edge.
