Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Århus, Denmark!
How did you meet?
Svend and Lasse (guitars) met at a bar in Aarhus. Chatted each other up about death metal, met the following week. Within 4 months, Baest was rehearsing.
How long have you been playing as a band?
Since October 2015.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
It’s the Danish word for ‘beast’ – represents that nature of the music of course!
What are your influences?
Bloodbath, Opeth, Iron Maiden and almost everything in between! Horrendous is a huge inspiration at the moment.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
Baest is a contemporary take on classic death metal, with Scandinavian roots. All the music is concept based, and we do not try to emulate, we try to recreate the old school feeling/classic songwriting with our own melodic twist. We are not shy for an 80s riff!
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
The debut album (and upcoming 2nd) revolve around historic religious ideas, mixed with our own stories and tales.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Fast, intense, and fun. We love it and therefore show it. Simon is a madman on stage, Svend and Lasse whirlwind any skepticism away, Muddi roars the crap out of anybody and Sebastian’s double bass makes the stage crumble. Our London show with Decapitated (February) is gonna be our 100th show!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Doing the biggest wall of death at a festival as a new and upcoming band is one of the craziest moments!
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Svend uses a Gibson Firebird + Flying V through Orange amps and the HM2 pedal.
Lasse plays his trusty Gibson Explorer through Peavey or Bogner amps, and also through an HM2.
Muddi uses Rickenbackers exclusively! Through TC-Electronic amps.
Sebastian is fond of Yamaha and Zildjian.
What are your plans for 2019?
We’ve got a couple long tours coming up, with some big festival shows. First a big tour with Decapitated – then a great summer and who knows what will happen after summer! Especially the Danish festival who have greeted us some insane stages to play. We start recording the second album in February, so it’s ready for its release this year as well!
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
We would definitely open up for Abbath, as he is fucking crazy (in all the good ways) and has the greatest band and crew around. An opener would be up and coming Danish death metal trio Chaotian. Brutal, underground, scary and straight from The grave.
