Band of the Day: Dark Sky Park

Earlier this week we were lucky enough to get to premier the new video from Dark Sky Park… so now we need to know a bit about them. Thankfully they took the time to answer our regular interview questions…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Sheffield, England.

How did you meet?

Ains and Debs met by accident in a guitar shop, Jai joined them after replying to an add for ‘Psychotic Drummer Needed’ or something like that..

How long have you been playing as a band?

For about 4 years, with Jai joining in March this year.

Before you get sick of being asked. where does the band name come from?

From a BBC News article about dark sky parks. It seemed like a good name for our dark musical intentions!

What are your influences?

It changes by the month! Awesome electric guitar music in general! For the last few months there’s been a lot of Slaves, Royal Blood and SOAD. Beyond that, how long have you got? Metallica, ABBA, Black Sabbath, Ziggy Stardust, Radiohead, Soundgarden, Iron Maiden, Guns n’ Roses, Pat Benatar, Alice in Chains, Beatles, Deep Purple, UFO, Chic…

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

That we aren’t trying to sound like a genre. We love a great tune and we don’t care when or where it’s from, how (un)cool it is or where it fits in to a playlist.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yes, strength, defiance and empowerment.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Good question! We’ve finished a tour of the UK recently, which was really good! Our live shows are powerful and engaging. Debs loves to talk to the audience and get them involved!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Debs sat amongst/on a crowd full of 6-foot drunk Scottish Rugby fans in kilts at a gig in Leeds and demanded they all to sing along to “Stand My Ground”. It was almost like a massive rock lap dance!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Ainsley plays a Gibson Flying V into a 70s Marshall stack. Debs loves her Schecter Hellraiser bass and Jai plays a huge Yamaha Stage Series drum kit.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our charity single “Stand My Ground” in aid of the domestic abuse charity Refuge.

What are your plans for 2018?

Err, well there isn’t much of it left! ;) In 2019 we’re hoping to hit the festival circuit hard and release more tunes through the Holier Than Thou label.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d probably like to support Queen at the moment! Our mates Yur Mum would get the support slot.
