Band of the Day: DayGlo Mourning

Today is brought to you by the way of doom…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Matt is the local GA boy, Ray is from Chicago and I’m from West Virginia.

How did you meet?

Matt posted an ad on Craigslist looking for a guitarist for a doom startup band which I answered. He and Ray had been working on a few other things prior to my answering the ad and we took off from there.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We started playing together in May of 2017.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Matt was friendly with a band who sometimes used an alias called Dayglow Mourning and the Piece Lovers. He suggested we use DayGlo Mourning and once it grew on us we got permission to use it.

What are your influences?

The obvious culprits certainly… Black Sabbath, Sleep, Electric Wizard. But early on we all grew up on the old school thrash scene heavy hitters.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Well, we’re still pretty new so the music is evolving with each new song we write. But we definitely strive to bring something heavy and dark.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

I try not to get too socially relevant with the lyrics. We have enough of that in our daily lives as it is. Most of the songs engage the fantasy world somehow. If you’re a listener who plays MTG you’ll find a mention here or there for sure.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We want the crowd to literally feel the power of the riffs so we bring the gear to make it happen. In the past year we’ve booked about 10 shows so we’ve been pretty busy trying to get things written, recorded and into the set.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I’m gonna plead the 5th on that one for myself… but a long time ago I saw The Exploited in a little bar in Nashville. It was complete pandemonium in that place, absolutely brilliant.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

  • Joe – Gibson, Orange, Sunn, Verellen, Matamp, Darkglass and Decibel Sound Implements
  • Matt – Rickenbacker, Orange, Sunn, Ampeg
  • Ray – Mapex drums

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We currently have an album pressing with Black Doomba Records due out later this year. Its a split album called Rope Enough for Two, with our first three recordings and an 18 minute suite by Bludy Gyres based on Jack and the Beanstalk.

What are your plans for 2018?

We plan to get back in the Studio to record another song for Black Doomba Records which will appear on another compilation album sometime next year.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I’d love the opportunity to play in front of Conan. John and Chris are great guys and their new album Existential Void Guardian is quintessential, crushing Conan. To open I would choose one of my favorite local bands called Bigger Mountain. They are three very young, talented guys who are a very tough act to follow but I just love what they do.
