Band of the Day: Anisoptera

Digging into the endless sack of bands to answer our Band of the Day questions, we’ve got something for you today to show you the Bay Area can produce more than just thrash…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from the Bay Area, CA.

How did you meet?

Randall and Robby met at a local show, met up and started writing music together, which formed into Anisoptera today.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Our first show was June 23rd 2013 and we’re still pushing five years later.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Anisoptera is the genus species deriving from Odonata (Greek can be translated to the flesh of a dragon’s tooth). Odonata can be divided into three groups: one of them being the well-known dragonflies (Anisoptera).

What are your influences?

Beyond Creation, Gojira, Gorguts, Frank Zappa, Animals as Leaders, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Deftones to name a few!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music a blend of heavy and groovy riffs mixed with different time signatures and tempo changes.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Our lyrics are all set apart with their own story, metaphorical twists, and life experiences. We set the tone and leave the rest for you to interpret.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We love to windmill and good ol’ headbanging fun. I believe our album release this September 13th will be our 85th show.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I would have to say when we played with Sepultura at the DNA Lounge a few years back, there was literally non-stop stage diving the majority of the show! It was pretty rad to see and experience.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Right now our guitarist is using a Peavey 6505+ Head with a Marshall 1960 JCM900 4×12 Cab and an Ibanez RG7321. We run a simple setup live, standard drums, bass rig, 2 guitars and vocals.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Right now we are in the midst of promoting our debut album release for Spawn of Odonata you can preorder at our bandcamp. To be released September 13th at Oakland Metro Operahouse.

What are your plans for 2018?

Aside from the album release we are already starting to write new material, hope to play a few more shows this year and gear up for an album/EP release for 2019, along with some touring.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

It would be a dream to open up for Gojira, the opening slot is definitely a hard choice, we’d definitely want to bring some homies in to share this awesome experience with us, Hounds of Innsmouth!
