Having recently dropped their debut single, pop punkers Midnight Skies are the latest to answer our Band of the Day questions
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are from Seattle, WA.
How did you meet?
Kalevi and I are brothers, we met Kyle years ago when his band was playing a show that Kalevi and I were playing. We connected at that show and invited him to play a show with our band cause we needed a guitarist. He ended up playing shows with us and then became a full time member.
How long have you been playing as a band?
We’ve been playing in a band together for a long time. We started this project Midnight Skies this year, but before that we were in a band called Beneath The Spin Light and we had about a 4 year run under that name.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
The band name was initially a song title I had for a song I had started writing to about a year or so ago. Passed the name around to the guys and we liked the idea so it stuck.
What are your influences?
We all listen to so many different artists and bands. We’re influenced by bands like All Time Low, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, etc.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
New wave pop punk. Similar sounding to bands like Waterparks, All Time Low, Makeout, etc. We’ve always tried to have a unique sound to our music. We write all our songs with emotion and what we’re feeling in that moment. Writing for us is cool because we each write so differently, it makes our songs really interesting when we start putting everything together. I think it makes us diverse in sound and fun to listen to.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
We talk a lot about real life struggles that everyone goes through. We want our listeners to feel something when listening to our music. Every song has something that everyone can relate to.
What’s your live show like?
Our live show has always been energetic and fun. We come to party and have a good time.
How many shows have you played?
We have yet to play a show under the new name Midnight Skies. We will be having our first show at some point in the next 2-3 months.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
When I was a teen I saw a band called letlive. Their singer from the start of the set til the end was absolutely insane. He was jumping off cabs, climbing rafters, and swinging above the crowd upside down while screaming. Ever since then, I’ve always gone as crazy as possible on stage when performing.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Kalevi plays a Tama kit, I play a Les Paul, and Kyle plays a Schecter.
What are your plans for 2018?
2018 is going to be filled with a ton of music dropping, shows locally, and we may even hop on a tour at the end of the year!
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
That’s a hard one, there’s so many great bands out there. Opening up for a band like Blink-182 would be sick! Definitely would have to bring along our friends in Point North! Those dudes are crushing the scene right now and are such talented musicians.
