Band of the Day Revisited: Dead by Monday

We featured Dead By Monday as a Band of the Day in January last year, focussing on their new material at the time. They’re back – and this time they tell us about themselves in their own words…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Our guitarist is from Manchester originally but the band was formed in Glasgow, Scotland – the best city in the world!

How did you meet?

Our guitarist (Paddy) and bassist (Declan) had met through playing in another band a few years before. Murray (our singer) joined forces to start writing songs and then Ciaran came in on drums as the final piece of the puzzle!

How long have you been playing as a band?

We’ve been playing together for about 2 and a half years now.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It was something Murray said when he was working a shift where he was taking down AC/DC’s stage show a while back, “After this, I’m gonna be dead by Monday”. We feel the name perfectly encapsulates how tired people have become with working the same old 9-5 job til they die, we all deserve better than that.

What are your influences?

Our influences are so varied it would take days to list them all! Rage Against The Machine, Tool, Slipknot, Gallows, Refused, Rush and Parkway Drive are just a small handful of bands we look up to in our sound!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Probably the wide range of influences is what makes Dead by Monday stand out compared to everyone else. We try not to pigeonhole ourselves and when writing we’re not afraid to bring anything to the table or to experiment. This results in heavy music with something in it for everyone, no matter what your preferences are!

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Yeah, the sorry state of world politics today.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Our live shows are always crazy, chaotic and energetic. We always try our best to make it a party and involve the crowd as much as possible. If you come to a Dead by Monday show be prepared to jump about and move, it’s not for the faint hearted and it really is a workout!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Following on from what we just said there, in our last show, Murray (vocals) tore the ligaments in his left knee during our second to last song. He’d been knocked to the floor and had to drag himself to the side of the stage where the absolute trooper finished the set lying on his back before having to get taken straight to hospital! He’ll be okay, but maybe won’t be jumping into the mosh pits any time soon after that!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Paddy (guitar) exclusively uses the Charvel Desolation series of guitars running through a 120 watt Peavey JSX tube amplifier. Declan (bass) is a big fan of the high end punch that LTD basses provide without cutting out the low end. Big shout out to Paiste Cymbals as well – if they didn’t exist Ciaran (drums) would have a lot more spare money than he does!

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our debut EP, Almost Punk is coming out on July 27th. We’re incredibly excited to share this achievement with the world and can’t wait for everyone to be able to sink their teeth into the record! The debut track, “Dead Souls” is available to stream over on our Facebook page so head on over and check it out!

What are your plans for 2018?

We’ve already begun writing for our next release so after a number of shows we’re going to head back into the studio and create something wonderful. 2018 is the year of writing so 2019 is the year for world domination!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’ve said it before and we’re not going to stop saying it until they listen, but we would love to support Skindred, the sheer energy they bring to the room is unparalleled in modern rock music and both bands would compliment each other perfectly. As for opening, our go to band would be a group called Whenweweredead who are another Glasgow band. Good friends of ours and absolutely phenomenal musicians to boot.
