Band of the Day: Enhailer

With only two members, Enhailer can’t make that much noise, right? Right? One half of the band, Chadd, is here to tell us how wrong we are…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

I (Chadd Beverlin) am from Akron, Ohio, and Mike is from Dayton, Ohio.

How did you meet?

Through other people who wanted us to be in a band together with them. Once we met each other, we just kind of locked in and have been playing together now for about ten years. We’d prefer to keep it that way.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Just under four years.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We wanted a name that wasn’t an actual word and we were thinking about the creating process as being kind of like an inhaling and exhaling process. Like some kind of give and take. Enhailer ended up coming out of that.

What are your influences?

Neurosis, Mastodon, tons of shit that isn’t heavy. We are also big fans of classic country, jazz, and lots of other genres.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We try to incorporate instruments into our songs that are not typical of our genre, like an upright bass, violins, melotrons.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

None other than the fact that we use lyrics very sparsely.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We’ve probably played over a hundred shows, but this band is still fairly young. We’ve focused more on writing than actually playing shows, even though that may be about to change. As for the live show itself, I’m behind a drum kit, so I don’t know what’s going on. It’s probably loud.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I don’t want to get arrested.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I use a Tama Starclassic with Zildjian Avedis cymbals, a Ludwig Black Beauty snare, and DW pedals. Orange amps, Marshall and Emperor cabs.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our new record. We just received the test pressing for our first vinyl release, our most recent Dumb Enough to Care EP. The record will be released in June. We are also having a drawing to win a copy of the test pressing. You can find details about that on our Facebook page.

What are your plans for 2018?

Touring as much as possible, and attempting to write for a new record inbetween.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I would love to open for Mastodon or Neurosis. If I had to choose an opener, I would love Mouth of the Architect. They’re really good friends of mine and I love hanging out with them. They’re from Dayton.

From previous Band of the Day Stone Theory: What do you think of the relation between social media and being a band in this day and age?

It makes things easier to promote, but it also takes a lot of the hard work out of being in a band, which is kind of necessary in a lot of ways. It weeds out lazy people. Now anyone can say they’re in a huge band because they have a few thousand likes on Facebook but may have never even played a show.

From another BotD, Vanity: If you could go back in time and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?

Jesus. For myself personally, that’s too complex of a question. I would probably say to never compromise your ethics or beliefs and never take the easy way out, because any time I did that I failed miserably at whatever I was doing.

And from Regulus: What’s your pre-show ritual or what’s the weirdest you’ve heard of?

Me, personally, I meet with a lot of people, and I smoke a lot of pot, so I can stay calm. The weirdest thing I ever heard was that the dude from Monster Magnet rolled out a yoga mat and started doing aerobics before their set. He allegedly asked a bunch of people back stage to stop smoking while he was working out because it was making him cough.
