Band of the Day: Rustlung

Crustier than a French baguette, and with more attitude than a hormonal teenager is Rustlung, today’s Band of the Day. The stoner metal quartet hail from the West Midlands, managing to rise to the finals of the Birmingham Metal to the Masses competition, and have recently released their first full length album Rage Quit. The group encapsulate the feeling of anger within their music, capitalising on everything which worked from their previous EP, Origin, while still finding new and elaborate ways to express their musical intent throughout the album.

Rage Quit is not an album for the faint of heart. In fact, it is an album for only the most hardy and battle-worn metalheads; those who know how to withstand a wicked amount of fast-paced, and unforgivably weighty metal. From the word go with introductory track “Black Eye”, Rustlung make themselves known to be a band that do not care for messing about. With not a second wasted, the listener is thrown in to the deep end, with their massive, wave-like guitar riffs rolling over you, accompanied by hard, taught-sounding drums.

This is very much the attitude for most of the album, with Rustlung caring not for who is listening or what they think, simply knowing that they have something to say, and that it must be heard. The walls of noise produced within this album are enough to crumble a grown man, shrinking the listener down in order to make them feel as small and vulnerable as possible.

Sounding like a bizarro version of late-era Darkthrone, Rustlung manage to encapsulate a crust-punk style, yet infuse the anger and sheer aggression of death metal in to it. This is an album designed for metalhead, by metalheads. It ticks all the right boxes, and then some! Be sure to let Rage Quit enter your earholes as soon as you can, and I’m sure that you won’t regret it.

Rage Quit is out now and is available to order here.
