Band of the Day: Fall Flavored

Hailing from France, Fall Flavored recently dropped half a circle of goodness. Well, 180 degrees makes half a circle even if that would make a pretty lousy CD. Anyway, they’re today’s Band of the Day.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

(Benji) We are from Lille, north of France.

How did you meet?

(Benji) The God of music sent a vision of each other in our sleep and we found us! More seriously, we just met on internet musicians’ forum. Just simple as that.

(Phil) I met Benji on a sex forum specialized in acrobatic sex but finally we realized we make better things at playing music!

How long have you been playing as a band?

(Benji) The band started in 2014. The actual line up has been for one year.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

(Benji) Ahah, no worries! So this is the story. We were scheduling the release of a debut demo in October 2014 with no band name idea. So, we started brainstorming and finally we thought about the season at that time. The EP was a bit melancholic, perfect for rainy days. There was the smell of fallen leaves outside. So we thought “Fall Flavored”! It sounds good and poetic.

What are your influences?

(Phil) Our influences are very wide, I’m a big fan of the Muse atmosphere, more particularly the way Dominic Howard plays (drums): very dynamic and direct style. But some references like Green Day, Sum 41 or David Bowie make my day too!

(Pierre) Yes, like Phil said, it’s very wide. All of us listen to lots of different styles of music. Benji is our punk rock guy, big listener of bands like Sum 41 and Anti Flag. And I prefer alternative rock like Paramore, post rock/math rock like And So I Watch From Afar and metalcore/easycore like Bring Me The Horizon.

(Benji) I also like Japanese rock bands like One Ok Rock, Uplift Spice, Ellegarden. The Japanese rock scene is very impressive.

(Yasmine) I’m more into metal with bands like Avenged Sevenfold, August Burns Red, A Day To Remember, While She Sleeps. But in fact I listen to a lot of things too, as long as I like it. I don’t want any restriction about my influences.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

(Benji) Fall Flavored is a catchy edgy rocky punk boum boum sound! A review said “La punta di diamante del gruppo si chiama Yasmine” [The spearhead of the group is called Yasmine] So Yasmine makes us unique I think.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

(Yasmine) For the lyrics… I write on everything. I’m inspired by common life scenes. There is so much to say about people. I don’t need any cause to defend or so. I want to communicate with people who might recognize themselves in my lyrics, and why not, gather them into the Flavored community so they may find support or anything. I want to discuss with them about them.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

(Benji) It’s look like a punk party with friends. You know, drink beers, make noise, play fast and just have fun together.

(Phil) Since we released 180, we played around one show per week.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

(Benji) Playing drunk like a rockstar… and it’s the most stupid thing to do because at the moment you think you are cool and exceptional but in reality, you are just a drunk band who can’t play properly.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

(Benji) PRS guitar and Marshall amp.

(Pierre) A fuckin’ Dingwall NG-2. I play punk rock but I also really love Periphery and the sound of Nolly.

(Phil) Pearl Master Premium Maple for the drums shells (12”, 16”, 22”), DW Performance snare drum (14”), SABIAN X-plosion crashes (16”, 18”), Zildjian A custom hi-hat (14”) and sweet ride (21”) and a Paiste 2002 (18”) china.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

(Benji) We just unveiled our new album 180. Ten tracks of pure energy. Just go listen to it.

What are your plans for 2018?

(Benji) Touring! Touring! Touring! Touring a lot! And probably new songs at the end of the year 2018. We still have a lot of idea to record so stay tuned.

(Yasmine) Yeah a lot of concerts! Let us meet you and share a wonderful musical moment! And I can’t wait to go back to the studio to record a lot of other albums! Well… let’s be realistic for now: a lot of other songs!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

(Benji) Without hesitation, I would choose Sum 41 to support and Anti-Flag to open. I would not give a chance to my mates to choose over bands.

(Philippe) MUSE MUSE MUSE and Green Day.

From previous Band of the Execrated: If you could be a celebrity for a day, who would you be?

(Benji) I would be Alizée (French pop singer)

(Phil) Madonna and see how it is possible to be a living skeleton.

(Pierre) Till Lindemann from Rammstein to use fireworks and flame thrower on stage!

From another BotD, Nale: If Jesus played in a band, which instrument would he play? (please debate)

(Benji) Definitely Handpan Riddim at Woodstock making love with every boys and girls. Cause Jesus is love.

(Phil) He would play Pipo because in France, when we say “jouer du pipo”, it means to say blarney and that is what he’s been doing for 2000 years.

(Pierre) Hum… if I sum up the two guys, he will play with his pipo in Woodstock… well that sounds good for him!

And from Nomasta: What is your favourite album for those special fuzzy tingle times?

(Benji) Does This Look Infected – Sum 41

(Phil) Black Holes and Revelations (but not Benji’s one) – Muse
