Before Sunday are another band to tackle out our Band of the Day questions. Singer Stella was the one to sit down, armed with nought but a quill and an inkwell full of blood… Well, OK, she actually replied by email but that’s hardly as exciting.
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
Hi guys! Thank you for having us! Our name is Before Sunday and we are from Greece but the band is based in London where we are living for the last 5 years!
How did you meet?
In 2013, me and Nik (guitarist / composer) after being part of several music projects, decided to start something new together. Through a common friend, I met Nik, who was looking for a singer and we got stuck straight away. Our dreams ‘matched’ on many levels and I became a member of the band. That’s how we started recordings and creating videos for YouTube. A little later I moved in London, following Nik, who was already there.
How long have you been playing as a band?
We’re playing as a band since 2013! Time flies!
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
One day we’ve realized that the most common day that we were performing, was on Saturday so without second thought we said Before Sunday. Also me and Nik decided to work together on a Saturday a little bit before midnight. Oh there was a list of other names as well…
What are your influences?
Musical influences? Can be anything. From pop and blues to metal. We always filter our influences in our own way.
We are seeking inspiration on our daily lives. This is the main element that affects our music. Especially in London you can have so many experiences.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
I wouldn’t dare to put a label to our music! We like to blend different music genres based on the ‘mainstream’ point view. But you can easily find pop, rock, funk and blues in our songs. Experimenting with music is one of the fun parts of being in the band! So we are writing what really comes out of our soul and experience. It is limiting when we stick labels to every artist.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
Not really. Could be about disappointment, pain, betrayal or strength, encouragement and positive energy.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
You can expect a variety of groovy, energetic, up-tempo and emotional vibes! Also lots of backing vocals and ‘rich’ arrangements on our songs! We always give 110% on stage regardless of crowd size. From 2013 till now?! We have played many shows!
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
We all know that the audience can be a bit over reactive sometimes but we didn’t have something crazy yet.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Guitars: Fender Stratocaster USA, Fender Telecaster USA, Ovation acoustics
Amps: Rivera and Blackstar
Mics: AKG and Shure
Of course we are trying all kinds of equipment in the studio!
What are your plans for 2018?
To complete our album, release it and introduce it to the world! A music tour in England-Greece-Italy will be the next step and of course the release of our second video !!!
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
I think this band would be Muse! They are excellent musicians, successful and incredibly talented. We love their ‘sound’, their songwriting and the arrangements of their compositions. They manage to combine so many musical influences in a very unique way. We would definitely love to go on tour with them! You should definitely check out Jade Vine. They are good friends, playing prog rock with excellent song writing.
