We spoke to Patient Sixty-Seven a couple of years ago so we thought it was time to catch up and see if much has changed. Hailing from Perth (the Aussie one, not the Scottish one), three-piece Patient Sixty-Seven’s Tom Kiely (vocals) nicely answered our Band of the Day questions. So if you want to find out howĀ Shutter Island relates to the name (if you’ve not seen the film already), read on…
The band kind of formed as an outlet for myself and our guitarist to write music for fun. It wasnāt really ever anything intended to be serious or too intense, it snowballed after we put out a song or two in the early days and we decided to start playing shows. I went to school with Declan (guitar) and he jumped on board early on.Ā Rory (vocals/guitar) joined the band early last year, however heād filled in for a few shows prior to that so we all knew him really well. We have Andy and Scott playing bass/drums for us, and we met them through our local music scene!
How long have you been playing as a band?
Weāve been playing live as a full band since early 2015. We took a big break early last year to write/record our current release, and have been back playing live since August!
Before you get sick of being askedā¦ where does the band name come from?
Shutter Island! It just made sense at the time when we were throwing around names and it stuck.
What are your influences?
Our influences vary for sure. Everyone playing in the band has their own styles of music that theyāll listen to. As a collective group, we definitely take from some of our favourite heavier bands. Groups like Architects, Breakdown of Sanity and In Hearts Wake. I definitely am a sucker for that throwback metalcore sound, the big choruses, heavier sections and integrating electronic components into our sound.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
I just think we bring a lot of different things to the table! We have tried to make our new music really honest and in your face. Holding nothing back, and some of the moments from the new EP are by far and away our most intense yet.Ā I think in terms of describing our music – it is heavy music that mixes all of our favourite elements of the genre. But I suppose the best way to find out is to listen!
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
The lyrical themes of late are definitely more removed from anything Iād written before. Iād almost call it self-absorbed. Writing about how Iām feeling, thatās where lyrically I was able to get the most out of myself and write proudly. I didnāt want the process to be rushed or forced, so itās a genuine recount of how I was feeling in regards to life at the time. Coping, finding a way forward and breaking the cycle – are just some of the themes found on the new EP.
Whatās your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Weāve played plenty of shows around our home town in Perth. Our live show hopefully encapsulates our music pretty well, lots of energy, moving around and having a real good time.
Whatās the wildest thing youāve seen or done at a live show?
At one of our shows? I seriously still love it when we get a circle pit or genuine mosh going. It just brings it all to another level! Weāve had a good amount of people going at it before and the room just completely opens up.
What are your plans for 2018?
Shows, shows and more shows – plus promoting our newest release. Please do check out our new EP Four Walls – it dropsĀ March 2! Head hereĀ to listen and preorder!
Lastly, if you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mates band weāve not heard of before!
This is a hard question! I think just in terms of their gravity and what theyāve accomplished in their career to date, I would love to open for Bring Me The Horizon. That would be incredible, and to open? Iām a huge fan of the boys in Once Almost Never. A great up and coming local band out of our area – check them out!
