Band of the Day: Anavae

In all the time I’ve been with Moshville Times, I’ve never conducted a Band of the Day. So it’s only fair that to pop that said cherry, it’s with a band who are something completely different from what I’d listen to. Blending electronica with rock, Anavae have recently released their latest EP Are You Dreaming? and this doesn’t mark the first time they’ve appeared on these pages. So let’s read on and find out more…

Where are you guys from?

South-East London. Represent.

How did you meet?

Becca: The internal cringe of thinking this far back in time still doesn’t lessen with more time…we were both around 18 playing in a different band together, but if you want exact specifics.. I was sitting on a wall around the back of our practice room crying about boys…”Er.. Becca.. this is Jamie, the guy auditioning today.” Solid first impression…

How long have you been playing as a band?

We formed Anavae together in 2011 which feels like a life time ago already.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We created the word and meaning in 2011 when trying to find something that properly represented what we wanted to do. Every time we’re asked the question the answer seems to get lost in the ether, so maybe it’ll become an enigma. Since our formation, the name seems to have made itself onto ‘baby girl naming’ websites which is surreal…

What are your influences?

Anything we can get our ears, eyes and hands on. Anything that makes us feel something

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We’re unique?

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Becca: I often find myself writing about existential and identity crisis, heart aches, desires, confusions and personal reflections. I never purposefully follow a theme, but all I can really write about is what I feel and what I think so naturally, the music will just follow the theme of what’s in my head.

What’s your live show like?

Come to one of our shows and find out! We like to fuse dark synths with rock and a dash of pop so if you like any of those things, you might like our show.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

We toured with Zoax a little while back and watching Adam perform every night was always pretty wild. We definitely recommend you check out their live show! You’ll be transfixed by his quirks. Rock ‘n’ roll isn’t as wild as it used to be though. There’ll be no trashing of backstage rooms or climbing up of scaffolding from us. We just want to sound cool and eat hummus.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Focusrite gear is a definite favourite of ours.  Although I must say.. if we could afford it we’d buy a Manson guitar which we used to track some of the songs on our new EP at Middle Farm Studios.

What are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We’d been sitting on our new EP Are You Dreaming? for over a year so it feels like such a relief to finally get it out into the world. Go stream it on Spotify!

What are your plans for the rest of 2017, into 2018?

Do as much cool shit as we can. We’re just so relieved to have this EP out in the world. We’re looking forward to brushing off the stress that’s come from waiting for so long, and to really start enjoying writing new music again. We’re playing our final shows of 2017 with Area 11 at Boston Music Rooms on the 11th and 12th – http://area11.band/shows

From previous Band of the Day, HalflivesWhat do you like most and what do you like least about touring?

Anavae: Touring can become your most favourite thing in the world to your least within the space of a few hours. Playing shows is an emotional rollercoaster. Being so completely out of your comfort zone is probably our most and least.

From previous Band of the Day, We Fall SlowlyIf you could change one thing in the world we live in today, what would it be?

Jamie: Free Marshmallows for everyone.

Becca: Marshmallows aren’t vegetarian… How about free healthcare for everyone? Is that cool enough?

From previous Band of the Day, Defences: What is, objectively speaking, the best type of bear and why

Anavae: Bear hugs.
