Opening my email can sometimes feel like a bit of a lottery; I never know what kind of bands I’ll have my editor asking me to write features on, and whether they’re any good or not. I have to say though, today’s Band of the Day, Dark Stone, and their self-titled EP were an absolute treat to listen to. The hard rock quartet from Vancouver take the classic rock sound and infuse their own bluesy elements to create a sound that is truly unique and something you can’t help but rock along to.
The standout track on Dark Stone is definitely “What It Feels Like”, a song through which Dark Stone are able to demonstrate their technical prowess, and unique sound. Singer Matt Mintenko shows off his range in this song, making use of the rough, harsh vocals which you might expect to find in a hard rock band, and complementing those rough vocals with a softer, melodic chorus.
Stefan Grabowski’s hard drums introduce the track and don’t let up for a single second, while Jason Mintenko’s heavy, crunchy-sounding riffs and brilliant solo towards the end of “What It Feels Like” really steal the song.
The band’s self-titled debut EP, Dark Stone, is available to listen to on Bandcamp, so you really have no excuse not to listen to this Canadian powerhouse of rock.
