Band of the Day: Crystal Ignite

New day, new band. Take it away… Crystal Ignite of, erm, Crystal Ignite!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

I’m originally from Melbourne Australia, the rest of my band are from the East coast of the United States

How did you meet?

Through recommendation of other people in the music industry

How long have you been playing as a band?

This particular line up is brand new. I have been working and touring with a different line up in Australia… I haven’t yet played with the US line up I have picked but as soon as I land in the States that will obviously change :)

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It’s under my name, Crystal Ignite!

What are your influences?

Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, Skin from Skunk Anansie, Annie Lennox, Prince, Banks, Florence And The Machine, The Weeknd, The Black Queen, Adele, Sia, The Cure, Phil Collins, Zac De La Rocha… too many to name them all, I have hundreds!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Raw, emotive, intense tribal drum driven alt pop, rock, hard rock and metal.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

I’m passionate about the planet and healing and helping others with my music. I have covered topics of healing abuse, overcoming bullying, overcoming haters, healing heart break – I tend to primarily focus on having an optimistic tone or positive resolve as I think as an artist you have a lot of power to influence people and I’d rather it be used in a positive way… though sometimes writing an angry song is positive too as it helps people to vent using music.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

I’ve played hundreds of shows and toured all over the US, Australia and New Zealand so far. The live show is extremely raw, intense and emotive – much like the music itself :)

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Lots of awesome things have happened in my time, funny things too. I once fell off the catwalk at my last band’s album launch, and my friend caught me. I was so in the moment after the show I forgot it even happened until someone told me about it haha! I’ve staged dived and crowd surfed at our farewell show before I left Australia 3 years ago to live in the States with my last band Bellusira.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.

I use a wired Shure beta mic at the moment and ACS customs moulded in-ear monitors

What are your plans for the rest of 2017?

To tour the US, record and release my EP and launch a successful crowdfunding campaign.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I’d love to support Halestorm again but this time in the US. It would be cool to have an Aussie band open and tour with us, so I’m gonna say Tequila Mockingbyrd, those girls are rad. Those guys or our buddies in another Aussie band Acolyte who just toured with us in Australia.

Courtesy of previous Band of the Day artist Halflives: What do you like most and what do you like least about touring?

I love the adventure, I love having to get by purely on the money you make from your passion of playing music and meeting amazing people and bands along the way.

I like least the lack of showers available and lack of healthy food on the road! We have to stop at Walmart super centers to buy organic vegetable platters to ensure we are getting good nutrition!
