Band of the Day: Drops of Heart

Drops of Heart continue our run through bands you probably don’t know yet, but really should…

Firstly, introduce yourself/yourselves and tell us a little bit about the band and how you came to be?

Greetings to everyone! We are Drops of Heart, four strange (but not crazy!) Russian guys, who like to play extremely melodic and probably heavy metal. The way of our band is pretty hard, and although Drops of Heart has existed for about eight years, we just started to make the first steps to big scene and foreign listeners. And we are very excited!

The reason of such long downtime is simple – in 2008 the band was created by young boys, who couldn’t even play their instruments. And after time, after multiple changes in the band’s line up, we found the people we needed to grow up as cohesive team. And we are ready to rock (does that sound corny?)!

What were you all up too prior to the band. Was this always the chosen path or did you have other dreams and aspirations?

All members of the band play music from school age but thoughts about the band came to us at different times. For example, our guitarist Vadim played the piano from seven years old, and he created his first band when he was thirteen. It was a funny blackened death metal band (can children compose funny metal music? We didn’t think so) and Artem, the drummer of Drops of Heart, also play in it.

Den, the man who tears his throat at the microphone had almost the same route to the band – he was the founder of Drops of Heart when he was sixteen. In fact, he is the only one who left from the original line-up. But our second guitar player, Igor, got his first band experience much later, after college – and this band was Drops of Heart. The whole band believes in his talent. Bringing him into the band turned out to be the right idea.

Of course all we have other dreams and purposes besides music. We don’t want to dwell on one, you know. To live the diverse life helps to search the inspiration. For example, Igor wanted to become an oceanologist when he was eleven!

Tell us about your latest EP/album and why our readers should check it out.

Our latest album was in 2014 and is called Новая Надежда (“A New Hope” in language you understand. Yes, like the Star Wars episode!). And, if we speak honestly, we don’t like it. Usually bands praise their releases, tell you that it’s great music and you must to listen it. But we don’t. Of course, we love some songs from it, we play it live and we wrote the honest lyrics from our heart. But we had not enough time, we had not enough money and we had not enough experience.

And now our mission is to restore our reputation. From the summer of 2016 we are releasing maxi-singles every 2-3 months. It helps us to put maximum effort to each song, make it as good as possible. Every maxi-single includes three versions of each song (English, Russian and instrumental – no one person will leave offended!) and some nice bonus track, for example, a piano version of our song or cover, etc. But the latest release was not a maxi-single. It was our holiday gift to our listeners, the metal version of Russian folk song Ой, Мороз, Мороз (“Oh, frost, frost”). We highly recommend you to listen it because it has truly Russian melody in the shell of modern metal. I hope it sounds interesting to you.

Have you ever come face to face with someone within the music scene who has left you awestruck and why?

Of course. We all have favourite bands and we have all visited their live shows. This is a moment when you understand that the man who wrote the songs you adore, the songs you grew up on, is just a real person with his personal thoughts, ideas. In such moments you understand that nothing is impossible. That you can become the person whose songs will be beloved by millions of people if you want. It’s inspiring.

If we were to head out to one of your live shows what can ourselves and others expect?

You can expect anything, because we have Igor (the leader of strange thoughts in the band) and you never guess what will come to his head at any time… Well, in general, you can expect drive, assertiveness, lyrical melodies and bewitching atmosphere.

If you had one artist/band that you could go on tour with tomorrow who would it be and why?

Rick Astley. Because he’s never gonna give you up. Furthermore, he’s never gonna let you down.

You can spend an hour with a musical icon living or dead, who would you pick, why and what would you speak about?

1) Kurt Cobain, simply because he influenced the formation of all alternative music in the world. A person who made emotional and memorable music from the simplest combinations of chords and inspired millions people across the whole world

2) Chuck Schuldiner. We think that this man had a golden soul and unique mind.

And finally and most importantly… is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

A funny fact – people in Russia didn’t spent Christmas so globally and massively. New Year is the main red-letter day that is celebrated with full force and over many days. We watch American Christmas movie exactly at the New Year holiday. So, for us Die Hard is a New Year movie!
