Band of the Day: Different Light

Possibly the first band from Malta we’ve ever featured, even if they’re no longer there. Ladies and gentle-beings… Different Light.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

The band originated in Malta in 1995 when I (Trevor) formed the band with three friends. I then moved to Prague in 1999 and reformed the band a bit later going through a few different line-ups, the present one being: Trevor Tabone (keyboards, vocals), Jirka Matousek (bass), Petr Matousek (drums), Petr Lux (guitars, backing vocals) and Petr Kania (live guitar).

How did you meet?

I met Petr Lux at a Queensryche gig, and the rest of the guys though internet ads, as it is done!

How long have you been playing as a band?

As I mentioned, the band originated in 1995 though the present line-up has been together since 2010.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Our original guitarist, Mark Agius Cesareo, came up with the name when we were drinking in a bar once. We were trying to think of a name for the band and it sounded the most normal the day after!

What are your influences?

Genesis, Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Rush, Camel amongst many others.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We are often described as neo-prog (not quite sure what that means). We’re definitely some sub genre of progressive rock I guess! Our uniqueness lies in the brilliance of our songs!

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

It really depends on which album or period of time really. The last album The Burden of Paradise dealt with subjects like freedom, love, death, religion, delusion and so on. The next album (already written) will be dealing with stuff like BPD, depression, bi-polar and experiences with people who are afflicted by these diseases.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

To be honest, we’ve hardly played any live shows as we’re more of an album band, but we should be playing a few later this year. I suppose two gigs we did that stand out would be supporting Fish in Malta in 1998 and Omega in The Czech Republic in 2012.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I’ve had a few too many to drink, is that even wild?

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I have a couple of Yamaha stage pianos and a Roland synth, don’t ask me the models cause I wouldn’t be able to tell you (unless they’re in front of me)!

What are your plans for the rest of 2017?

It should be a busy year as we’re hoping to start recording our new album and also playing a few gigs.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I’d love to support any of the bands that have influenced me, doesn’t really matter which one. The first person to ask could open for us, first come first served.
