Band of the Day – Seven Impale

Ever had one of those moments where you hear a song, wonder who created it and then the hunt begins? That’s the moment you turn into Dog the Bounty Hunter, you do, right? Yes? No? Well whatever, I did after hearing “What Am I Sane For?”, which is a wonderful intense prog rock jazz infused track. Written and performed by today’s band of the day, a gang of musicians who come out of Bergen, Norway called Seven Impale, and this song comes from their debut EP Beginning/Relieve from 2013.

Each year the City of Oslo puts on a jazz festival, a festival that attracts thousands who want to witness and be involved in the event. The reason for telling you this is because I managed to catch Seven Impale live in the centre of Oslo, playing a free gig for all to see.  Since then, they released their first full length album in 2014 “City of the Sun” and last year “Contrapasso” with backing from their fans via Kickstarter.

Why am I telling you this? The reason I wanted to share about these guys is because they’re one of those bands with so much talent, creativity and insight into where their music should go. They’ve the touch of Tool mixed with instrumental jazz. Fans of classic rock will salivate at their sound, which I did the first time I heard Beginning/Relieve. The haunting vocal style of vocalist and guitarist Stian Økland is heart wrenching at times, backed by drummer Fredrik Mekki Widerøe, guitatist Erlend Vottvik Olsen, bassist Tormod Fosso, saxophoniost Benjamin Mekki Widerøe and finally Håkon Vinje on the keys. They fashion their instruments with emotion and a sound way beyond their years.

Seven Impale have yet to tour the UK. I’ve been on my knees praying to a power greater than myself, that one day this band with their wonderful unique style of music will venture to these shores to carry on the work other musicians from Scandinavia are doing.
