Band of the Day: The Perms

It seems somewhat perverse and astonishing that today’s Band of The Day, The Perms, have just released their new single “Lose Yourself” from what will be their sixth album, starting back in 1998 with Tight Perm. What seems even more astonishing is that this three-piece alternative rock band from Winnipeg, Canada are only now managing to break out of their home market.

The single itself “Lose Yourself” is a great pop rock track that reminds you of Weezer and bands like Cheap Trick and, for me, the now-disbanded power rock band The Needles from Aberdeen. It is insanely catchy and has a super fun video to accompany it. This is MTV-friendly, radio-loving rock if you have ever heard it.

A dig through the back catalogue only exposes more of the same; highly intelligent, funny and catchy as hell. As I dug into their past I could hear influences as diverse as Superchunk, The Hold Steady and at times even REM.

In these days of social media, and the availability of music, images and stories at the click of a button, perhaps it is the fact that The Perms have spent the best part of their career on the road and trying to let the music do the talking is the reason you have not heard so much about them. With that in mind, I tracked down Shane to find out a little bit more about the band. A little bit like their online presence, Shane prefers to let the music do the talking…

Where have you been all my life?

We’ve been freezing here in Winnipeg, Canada. It’s -40 today.

In the almost twenty years of your existence the whole way music is consumed has changed. What do you see as the good and bad points of this?

Social media has really helped us find new listeners, new fans and has helped us to spread our music to places we’ve never been before.

What are your influences – individually or as a band?

We love the Beatles, of course, really digging the new Grouplove album and 21 Pilots ain’t too shabby.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We are sort of a cross between Weezer and Foo Fighters I guess. Tough to describe your sound when you’re making the music.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Not really, our next album covers everything from love to heartbreak.

If you could be part of any 3-band line-up (as support or headlining) who else would you have on the bill?

We would love to support Weezer or Grouplove.

Check them out now, it’s never too late to discover a new band however long they have been going. Truckfighters were my new discovery of 2016. The Perms could be yours.
