“Band” of the Day: Ian Carvalho

Ian Carvalho logoNot quite a band, hence the punctuation in the title – Ian Carvalho works alone. Here’s what he gets up to…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

I’m half Brazilian half Italian and living in London.

How did you meet?

I met Thiago (who’s playing with me right now) while touring in South America with my former band.

What are your influences?

I’m influenced by my experiences, it can be a book I’ve read, a bohemian kind of night or just looking at what’s around me, at the people and their life etc.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

My music is a syncretism of sound and message; it doesn’t belong to a single genre, is a mix of information, melodies, languages.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

I tend to talk about everything and so are my lyrics and my music, going from more pragmatic kind of themes to more surreal and metaphysic one.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

I like to give my 110% when on stage, even if the sound may loose a bit of quality (sort of a punk way to approach the stage I think). I played 1000+ concerts and gigs with my former band (NOVONADA). I’ll start playing gigs with my new project in October.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I started dancing with the crowd while the rest of the band was still playing and then invited people to come on stage and play with us.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I’m using a 90’s Yamaha drums kit (very grunge), a Semple Roland Sp-555 and a Fender Stratocaster Guitar.

What are your plans for 2016?

Plans for 2016 (or what is left of it) are the release of my first EP Morpheo in Eros, playing as much gigs as I can in the UK, then try to organise a small tour in Italy and a longer one in Brazil.

If you could be part of any 3-band line-up (as support or headlining) who else would you have on the bill?

At the Drive-in, Savages, Tool.
