Band of the Day: Methane

Methane - I Spit On Your GraveMethane got in touch with us a few weeks ago. They kindly sent through their press pack which I had a look at and then promptly forgot all about it because I’m too busy and pretty useless. This evening, in an effort to avoid real work, I was tidying up emails and came across it. Then I panicked. Then I gave their stuff a listen. And then I really regretted not checking them out sooner.

Formed in 2012 by two brothers (one of them, Tim Scott, has been in bands such as Revenant and HatePlow), they’re listed as being from Sweden though I believe the guys hail from New Jersey. Tim and Dylan Campbell were joined by Jimi Masterbo and Andreas Strom to fill out the ranks. The group sat down, magically created the three-track EP Southern Metal and took their first steps on world domination. Or they should have because it’s bloody good.

Thing is, these guys are from Sweden and somewhere up in the north of the US. And yet they’re blasting out Southern rock music that would do the likes of Pantera, Hellyeah or Texas Hippie Coalition proud. This isn’t me just throwing hyperbolic shit around, it’s true. There are only three tracks, but they’re damn good. You can check one of them out, along with its wonderfully cheesy video, below.

They followed this up a year or so later with a single called “Spit on Your Grave” which featured two tracks. They definitely dialled up the “heavy” on this one which has resulted in a slight drop in the groove quotient, but given that we’re now onto half an album’s worth of material it’s good to see that they’re happy to mix things up. The flurry at the end of the title track/A-side (anyone else remember that term) is guaranteed to send a packed gig venue into a frenzy.

Oh, talking of albums it seems that they have actually recorded a full LP of material – aside from the previously-released stuff – and are looking for someone to release it for them. If you’re a record company then I’d be banging on their e-door asking for a copy before someone else snaps it up.

All of their released material is available on reverbnation (link below) so please do check them out if the Southern/groove metal thing is in your “yes, I like that” list.
